COMPENSATION
Earnings Potential : $ 170,075 ( salary non-negotiable )
Overtime Eligibility: Not eligible for paid overtime in accordance with FLSA
SUMMARY
The Bridge and Tunnel Captain is responsible for the overall leadership, supervision, and operational management of the Authority’s uniformed personnel . This role ensures the effective development and enforcement of policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and performance of the uniformed personnel. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Revenue Recovery .
Key responsibilities include :
O verseeing and authorizing all law enforcement activities within the Authority’s jurisdiction, including collision response, fare evasion prevention, toll violation enforcement, and emergency incident management.
The Captain serves as the primary field commander, coordinating closely with partner law enforcement agencies and first responders to enhance resource allocation, operational efficiency, and interagency collaboration.
Additionally, the Captain works in close partnership with the management teams of MTA Agencies and Business Units , including the MTA Police to develop and implement coordinated action plans. These plans address both potential and active criminal activity, ensure efficient emergency and disaster response strategies, and enhance patrol operations across MTA crossings.
This position demands 24/7 availability, requiring the Captain to be accessible and prepared to respond to emergencies or incidents at any time.
T he Captain will also lead special projects and initiatives aimed at improving operational effectiveness and security enforcement strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS
+ Minimum three (3) years of experience serving in the permanent rank of Bridge and Tunnel Sergeant or Bridge and Tunnel Lieutenant .
+ A valid New York State driver’s license with no restrictions.
+ Must maintain Peace Officer status and meet all firearms qualification requirements.
+ Strong knowledge of supervisory principles, training methodologies, and disciplinary procedures.
+ Expertise in New York State Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle and Traffic Laws, New York City Rules and Regulations, and TBTA Rules and Regulations.
+ Familiarity with labor relations processes and procedures.
+ Ability to strategically plan, schedule, and deploy personnel based on operational needs.
+ Proven ability to effectively manage and lead diverse teams.
+ Strong conflict resolution, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
P REFERRED:
+ In-depth understanding of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA) operations and all MTA properties, including emergency and incident management, staff deployment, patrol and traffic management, supervision, and law enforcement.
+ Familiarity with MTA Bridges and Tunnels (TBTA) Collective Bargaining Agreements, including those governing Bridge and Tunnel Officers, the Superior Officers Benevolent Association, and Maintenance personnel.
+ Experience in resource allocation and data-driven staffing strategies to optimize performance and operational efficiency.
+ Proficiency in the operation of Authority vehicles and equipment, including marked patrol vehicles, wreckers/tow trucks, and snow removal machinery.
