Bus Operator - 2023-2024 School Year

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, operates a school bus in transporting children to and from schools. Employees in this class are responsible for following an assigned route and schedule in the safe and efficient operation of a school bus.

CERTIFICATE LICENSE:
Possession of or ability to obtain a Maryland Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes, passenger and school bus endorsements, or equivalent within the period of time specified by the pre-service training program. Certification in first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedures desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Be 21 years of age or older (COMAR 13A.06.07.06). Able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries and to entries on reports and records (Section 391.11 Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations). Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents. Knowledge of basic arithmetic. Working mechanical knowledge of school bus in order to complete pre-trip and post-trip inspection of equipment as required by commercial driver's license requirements, and ability to meet all pre-service training and testing requirements. Knowledge of the local street and road system of Montgomery County; knowledge of state regulations and laws pertaining to the operation of school buses; ability to interact positively with, gain respect of, and maintain discipline over student passengers to ensure that behavior is controlled and not distracting to safe driving; knowledge of safe, proper, and courteous motor vehicle operating procedures. Ability to operate a school bus transporting students in a safe, proper, and courteous manner. Ability to read, write, and communicate orally, understand and carry out written and oral instructions, maintain effective control over groups of children and work harmoniously with children and others. Ability to read and follow a road map. Ability to drive any size or type school bus in the fleet. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED required. Three years of successful automobile driving experience with a good driving record. Satisfactory completion of a prescribed pre-service instruction program within a reasonable period of time. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
