Business Control Officer 1LoD – Securities Backed Lending

What is the Opportunity?

This role serves as the senior-most advisor and partner to securities backed lending (SBL) operations on risk and control related activities and topics.  The role has a dual reporting relationship receiving day-to-direction from SBL operations leadership and aligned to the Chief Controls Officer who is responsible for objective setting and strategic priorities.  This role supports identification of issues and helps to design and implement solutions providing insights based on industry practices and regulatory expectations.  This role should offer challenge capability at the leadership table as a constructive and balanced partner to support alignment of business objectives with company risk appetite and applicable established risk limits.

What will you do?

Effectively advise, help and support SBL operations management with an informed and valuable risk and control perspective

Work collaboratively with 2nd and 3rd line colleagues across disciplines in support of a strong control environment and an effective risk management practice

Support the consistent and effective execution of key risk program activities including but not limited to Risk and Control Self Assessments (RCSA’s), Key Risk Indicators (KRI’s), Issue Management and Operational Losses, and other risk assessments to identify and quantify the risks and their associated controls

Support the development of strong risk culture, risk conduct, and risk literacy in the first line

Provide direction to control teams in support of organizational risk management priorities

Act as a liaison between 1LoD business operations management and 1LoD risk shared services

Support and facilitate audit and exam activities

Develop expertise in relevant Royal Bank of Canada (parent) and RBC Bank’s policies and procedures and from time to time, assist in their enhancement

What do you need to succeed?

Minimum 8 years of experience in first- or second-line risk and control functions Bachelors’ degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Deep understanding of relevant laws rules and regulations related to SBL operations

Track record of successfully overseeing complex large-scale transformation programs ideally including regulatory remediation programs at mid-sized or large institutions

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Previous experience in financial services industry and/or risk management

Project management or change initiative leadership experience

Demonstrated ability to think critically and facilitate change through collaborative effort.

Self-motivation, discipline, task focus, the ability to structure and present work and a proven record of delivering high quality results within strict deadlines.

Ability to multitask and prioritize several concurrent initiatives

Demonstrated ability to think strategically and apply creative solutions

Demonstrated ability to interact effectively internally and externally at executive management levels

Ability to clearly articulate risk management concepts to non-risk professionals

Master’s Degree and risk management professional certifications preferred
