About the Position:
The Business Development Engineer will assist in developing technology licensing opportunities with global petrochemical companies (in emerging markets) - Leveraging Goodyear's chemical process technologies for earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) and cash generation ($10-$15M each). This position will have project management responsibility for Goodyear licensing projects (process design package [PDP], detailed engineering reviews, start-ups and performance guarantees) - Capital spend ranges between $100-$300M per project. At the direction of the Business Development and Licensing Director, the incumbent will investigate new technologies/commercial opportunities. The incumbent will work closely with Chemical Research and Development (R&D) and Chemical Plant Operating teams in developing new opportunities/technologies/products that add to increased capacity utilization, improved operating efficiencies, internal tire cost savings and increased EBIT. This role will develop a basic understanding of all the Goodyear chemical technologies and work with individual plants/Chemical R&D in identifying new opportunities to improve plant utilization, lower cost structure (fixed/variable and raw materials), new product introductions, etc. In addition, the Business Development Engineer will work closely with the Chemical Business Development Leader to examine market based opportunities and calculate/determine potential financial rewards of each project. The position will explore/evaluate new process technologies (globally) and support development of the state-of-science unique polymers, other tire material related products and consumer products designed to benefit Goodyear. The incumbent will work with the Tire Materials/Consumer Products Commercial teams to develop an understanding of the chemical business (cost structures, market measures, competitors, products, pricing, EBIT, supply chain, etc).
Responsibilities:
Explore/Evaluate New Technologies: Work across department lines (from R&D to Operations, Supply Chain and the Commercial team) to investigate/report on new opportunities. Work with suppliers/customers/potential competitors and visit vendor shops/other rubber plants to evaluate performance of new equipment/technologies. Review observations with Goodyear Technical associates for possible future implementation. Work with the Business Development Sales Leader to evaluate market opportunities and financial impact of each opportunity.
Develop new contacts and make presentations to global chemical companies. Prepare technical and commercial proposals for new opportunities.
Help develop a project scope and schedules for potential licensing projects.
Develop a basic understanding for all of Goodyear Chemical's technologies and the operations at the four chemical plants/R&D.
Assist with Project Management of New Licensing Agreements: Coordinate activities for and participate in PDP preparation (includes working with plant personnel to write start-up procedures, working with licensee on detailed engineering design/procurement, recruiting/coordinating activities for start-up team and managing/documenting communication between Goodyear licensee/engineering companies)
Learn/Understand Chemical Commercial Operations (Sales, Marketing, Finance, Customer Service and Supply Chain Operations): Work with the individual Sales Managers to understand each business (Tire Materials and Consumer Products). Identify opportunities for new products, new applications (of existing products), new markets and new technologies. Go on sales calls to better understand customer requirements.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering
Experience:
5 or more years of experience in Process Engineering, Process Design and/or working in a Chemical Research and Development environment
Experience working with engineering design companies or in-house engineering for project design/procurement/construction
Experience working with process flow diagrams (PFD)/piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID)/process safety management (PSM) reviews (process hazard analysis [PHAs], pre-start safety reviews [PSSR], mechanical integrity [MI], etc.)
Capital project management or implementation/start-up experience
Knowledge of fixed/variable operational costs and raw material efficiencies
Financial project justification experience
Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of at least one of Goodyear Chemical's polymer (solution or emulsion), antioxidant/chemicals, CC5/isoprene extraction and other technologies related to the tire materials and consumer products industries desired
Ability to write technical/commercial proposals
Technical presentation and communication (written/verbal) skills
Ability to interact with personnel at all levels within the company (from the plant floor to the executive room)
