Business Intelligence Developer

GENERAL SUMMARY:  As a Business Intelligence (BI) Developer, you will be responsible for engineering, management and strategic planning. A BI Developer who designs, develops, and maintains business intelligence solutions, including data analytics platforms and reporting tools. They translate business needs into technical specifications and create visualizations and reports. Proficiency in database management systems and BI technologies is required.  These include dashboards, data visualizations, regular and impromptu reports, and data querying tools for users to the information they require.

Designing and developing business intelligence solutionsWriting and testing requirementsDeveloping and maintaining data processingImplementing and maintaining databasesMaintaining and improving tools for system analysisCollaborating with other teams to meet the needs of customersPerform SQL queries - design, code, test, and aggregate the results to create useful informationWrite technical documents on database contentMap various databases used in the organizationDevelop, design, and analyze data architecture and data warehousesAssesses current and future data processing needs for the company.Translate business needs to technical specificationsDesign, build and deploy BI solutions (e.g. reporting tools)Maintain and support data analytics platformsDB/DBA backgroundBusiness analysis skillsDebugging/troubleshooting skillsCreate tools to store data (e.g. OLAP cubes)Conduct unit testing and troubleshootingEvaluate and improve existing BI systemsCollaborate with teams to integrate systemsDevelop and execute database queries and conduct analysesCreate visualizations and reports for requested projectsDevelop and update technical documentationMaintains contacts with all user departments, software/hardware vendors, and other systems representatives.

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information SystemsMinimum of 3 years of experience in BI developmentExperience with large data sets, dimensional modelingExperience with business intelligence toolsStrong analytical skillsExperience with automated testingExperience with writing complex queriesUnderstanding of SQL and relational databasesStrong knowledge of data analysis and visualizationStrong knowledge of ETL and data modelingAbility to work in a fast-paced environmentStrong experience with debugging and issue resolutionStrong attention to detailWorks in a strong team environment.Ability to maintain a fair, consistent set of standards as they apply to work force.Adjust priorities and manage time wisely in a fast-paced environment.Strong communication skills in order to describe complex technical information to the non-BI developers in the company. Therefore, being able to communicate clearly and effectively is also an extremely required skill in this field.Ability to read and interpret documents such as computer documentation, hardware operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write business reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of managers, vendors and employees of the organization.Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.Problem solving skills required. Background in data warehouse design (e.g. dimensional modeling) and data miningIn-depth understanding of database management systems, online analytical processing (OLAP) and ETL (Extract, transform, load) frameworkExpertise with BI technologies (e.g. Microsoft Power BI)Knowledge of SQL queries, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)Experience with JET Reporting Services

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:  Bachelor’s Degree (B.S/B.A.) in Computer Science or equivalent for four-year college or technical school. Requires knowledge and skill in current technologies used by the company or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.  Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence.   Ability to communicate effectively with customers, vendors and other employees of the organization.  Requires excellent grammar and spelling. 

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Requires a valid driver’s license. 

Other Skills and Abilities:  Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment, such as a computer and keyboard, calculator, fax, photocopier, telephone, cell phone, etc.   Requires proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
