POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing leadership and direction for the accounting and budgeting processes with respect to the overall Business Operations strategy to enable effective capital deployment across Southern Company. This position will be part of a broader team responsible for implementing Business Operations elements across major capital initiatives, including power generation expansion projects, power delivery infrastructure improvements, and other critical support initiatives within Southern Company. Specifically, this position will:

Oversee the development, approval, and execution of the accounting and budgeting element for Business Operations to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and intra-company requirements.  Coordinate and interface with various Operating Company’s capital project teams and Accounting, Finance & Treasury (AFT) organizations Provide accounting and budgeting expertise to ensure costs and forecasts are captured and reported to meet project(s) and Company needs.  Serve as the primary point of contact for all project financial matters and assist in all cost-related audits for the project  Assist Project Teams with regulatory filings and internal audits  Provide analyses of budget variances and projections and prepare presentations and other informational documentation for executive management review 

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, setting direction, and engaging its team to enable successful execution of the results described above.  At the same time, this position must energize and motivate its team to maintain high performance and build a strong sense of teamwork that produces results, promotes efficient work processes, and places an emphasis on effective internal customer relationships, communication, and sound internal controls.

This position is responsible for providing guidance, opportunities, and a work environment that enables direct reports to achieve departmental and company business objectives, as well as their desired professional development.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

Utility accounting, budgeting and /or financial planning experience Working knowledge of basic public utility operations Understanding of Southern Company’s current suite of budgeting and reporting methodology, systems, and tools

Strongly Preferred:

Supervisory experience BS Accounting or Finance preferred, CPA or advanced degree a plus Utility regulatory experience a plus  Operational or corporate budgeting experience a plus. Construction project experience a plus

Strong analytical skills are critical – must have the ability to analyze data and discern relevant trends, explain variances, and identify cost drivers Ability to manage projects of various complexities simultaneously and meet deadlines Strong organizational & interpersonal skills Strong oral and written communication skills Strong motivational, leadership, and employee-development skills Computer skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Southern Company budgeting and reporting systems Ability to effectively respond to changing business needs Ability to build and maintain good working relationships with diverse groups Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
