Department Summary: The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Business Transformation Department is seeking an experienced, motivated, and creative business transformation leader who has a passion for solving problems through innovative solutions that help make government better. As a key member of our team, you will help the IRS and Tax Administration Division (ITA) gain and maintain preeminent status as the thought leader and trusted advisor with IRS sponsors as they engage in modernization and transformation activities, spanning people, processes, technology, and data. You will experience technical growth and be continually challenged with interesting problems. Roles & Responsibilities: The MITRE IRS Business Transformation Department is searching for a Principal Engineer to help expand and improve our growing business transformation portfolio. The Principal Engineer’s focus will be primarily dedicated to strategic business operations for tax administration, though the span of influence may span multiple departments within MITRE’s Center for Government Effectiveness and Modernization (CGEM) related to tax administration or other Treasury-related government agencies. In addition to working directly with sponsors executing their mission as Project Leader or Technical Leader, the Principal Engineer works across the division ensuring projects are using tax administration data, methods, and technology effectively to improve government mission outcomes. The Principal Engineer leads by example by being an expert in one or more areas of technical relevance to the division. The successful candidate will work closely with the Department Managers to ensure that a meaningful, coherent vision is realized across government projects and independent research efforts. The ideal candidate will have experience developing and deploying business processes; experience working in a data-intensive environment, will be familiar with key data management concepts and considerations; experience acting as a leader for project teams; experience proposing, conducting, and documenting analyses of operations for business re-engineering. As the operator of Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), MITRE’s focus is early-stage development and design. We deliver prototypes and engage at executive ranks to set agency technical strategy. The Principal Engineer ensures the sponsor strategy and execution stays on track for success. We expect every MITRE employee to: + Be fundamentally driven by the goal of improving government performance + Eagerly and constantly improve and broaden their leadership, technical, and communications skills over time + Demonstrate objectivity, technical excellence, and creativity + Be adept at communicating technical concepts to a variety of audiences + Work collaboratively across the organization while being a role model for grace and respect to others in MITRE and our sponsors Basic Qualifications: + Requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience. + Experience in Tax Administration + History of successful senior level operational leadership including, but not limited to, government processes, strategy development, ethics/fairness, governance, automation, implementation and monitoring. + Familiarity with data architecture and data management concepts and strategies, such as the data lifecycle, data stewardship and governance + An interest in deeply understanding government sponsors’ business needs and challenges + Experience working with or leading multidisciplinary teams + Ability to tailor communications to provide the appropriate level of detail to the audience, whether technical or executive + Executive leadership and organizational knowledge + Experience in business transformation + Eligibility for IRS Moderate Suitability (US government clearance) + This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site Preferred Qualifications: + MBA or other advanced degree in related field + Experience working in a consulting role + Experience working with the Federal government + Experience as a business integration manager This requisition requires the candidate to have a minimum of the following clearance(s): None This requisition requires the hired candidate to have or obtain, within one year from the date of hire, the following clearance(s): Suitability - IRS Work Location Type: Hybrid MITRE is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
