EES Coke Operations is a facility in River Rouge, MI on Zug Island. The plant produces coke from various types of coal blends and is then used as fuel in the blast furnaces at the steel mill.

 

This is not a position with Detroit Edison, it's a position with EES Coke Battery, which is a subsidiary of DTE Energy.

Job Summary

Location: River Rouge, MI

The ByProducts Turn Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the by-products plant which includes safety, environmental compliance, plant operations, coordination of maintenance activities, and management of by-products operators.

Key Accountabilities Leadership of safe operations and maintenance of the BP (by-products). This includes formal safety standards such as lock-out, hot work permitting, work permits, and confined space and leadership of personal safety development of operators   Support environmental compliance through efficient and effective plant operations which maintains environmental standards for wastewater and air standards Leadership of an operating crew to develop a high performing team  Support the daily maintenance of the plant, major maintenance, and capital projects Manage product inventories and supplies  Make decisions about and troubleshooting process operations Train new and experienced operators in operations and safety Minimum Education & Experience Requirements A Bachelor's or technical degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years’ experience performing similar responsibilities  In the absence of a formal degree, a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 7 years of experience in a coke by-product plant operation and maintenance capacity Supervisory experience in heavy industrial operations Other Qualifications

Preferred:

Experience in coke by-product plant operations.

 

Other Requirements: 

A valid driver’s license Manufacturing experience in an operating discipline Knowledge of OSHA standards and in training operators in safety processes Management of a 24-hour operation Knowledge of process equipment such as pumps, heat exchangers, distillation columns, and pipe work Strong problem-solving skills in chemical processes  Demonstrated ability to meet operational, production, safety, and financial goals Ability to function within a matrix organization in which functional and business leaders have equal authority within the organization and employees report to both a functional leader and a business leader Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both a functional and business leader, who collaborate on employee issues and decisions (including performance management, compensation and development) Proficiency in use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other computer applications Be available after hours and weekends to answer operator questions Knowledge of Six Sigma, Continuous Improvement, Process Safety Management, Best Practice, and Process Reliability a plus Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Enter and work in confined space areas Talk & hear; use hands & fingers; handle & feel; and able to reach with hands and arms extensively Frequent operations of controls with occasional driving and fine hand function manipulations of tools and equipment Vision requirements for this position include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus

 

Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme heat and cold. Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or machinery and burns. Occasionally exposed to vibration and fumes or airborne particles which will require the use of personal protective equipment including respirators; flame retardant clothing; self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), etc. Exposed to protected and unprotected heights, which requires the use of a personal fall protection system (harness/lifeline). The noise level in the work environment may occasionally go above the threshold, requiring PPE.
