Call/Volunteer Instructional Assistant Coordinator
The Department of Fire Services, through the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, provides training for firefighters from local fire departments at our Bridgewater, Stow and Springfield facilities, as well as regionally throughout the Commonwealth. The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy delivers nearly 1,000 courses to approximately 14,000 students each year. The Department of Fire Services is currently hiring a part-time Instructional Assistant Coordinator for the Call/Volunteer Firefighter training program. The position has varied night and weekend shifts, with assignments generally between 1 to 2 days per week. The programs are delivered throughout the Commonwealth and significant travel may be required. Specific duties of the position include: * Responsible for providing supervision of multiple Call/Volunteer classes at all MFA campuses and at assigned off-site locations. * Reviews and summarizes student evaluations. * Conducts program review for Call/Volunteer firefighting training program and becomes involved in re-development of existing programs and development of new programs. * Prepares new equipment and/or replacement equipment lists annually and submits to Program Coordinator. * Works closely with Support branch of DFS to ensure proper equipment and media are delivered to training sites. * Develops new instructors through coaching, mentoring, teaching, and guiding. * Observes instructors and provides guidance in program delivery. * Actively participates in coordinator meetings. * Researches, evaluates, and prepares recommendations on curricula, instructional methods, and materials for the program. * Develops tests, questionnaires, and procedures to measure effectiveness of curriculum and to determine if program objectives are met. * Recommends purchase of instructional materials, supplies, equipment, and visual aids to meet the needs of the program. * Works with staff in assessment, curriculum development, management of student behavior, and use of materials and equipment. * Observes, evaluates, and recommends changes in work of instructional staff to strengthen teaching skills in classroom. * Plans, conducts, and evaluates training programs and other learning opportunities for instructors to study new classroom procedures, instructional materials, and teaching aids. * Reviews written test scores and skill sheets and counsels students when necessary. * Prepares subjective evaluations on students for outstanding performance and non-acceptable performance and counsels the student and notifies the Chief of the Department. * Completion of online 10A program * Completion and maintain live fire qualifications * May be assigned additional projects by MFA management. Minimum Qualifications: * Must have a minimum of three years of relevant fire service or emergency service industry experience such as a fire officer, fire investigator, training officer, or fire prevention position. * Must be an instructor within a training program for a minimum of five years. * Must have completed the Fire Instructor II course and been promoted to Fire Instructor II with the MFA OR a minimum of three years of equivalent experience of instructional curriculum development and course delivery. Preferred Qualifications: * Instructor II certification * Must have superior interpersonal skills * Successfully completed the following MFA instructor courses or their equivalent: * Course Development * Advanced Presentation Skills * Instructor Supervisory Skills * Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and LMS * Able to spend no less than 2 days per week in the office at MFA * A team player and well organized * Demonstrated work record to support the skills required * Thorough knowledge of all areas of training for which the program is responsible *An Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action Employer.
