Cornell student services representatives across its administrative offices and within its colleges, schools, and units share a mission to partner with students, faculty, staff, and alumni, supporting strategic enrollment goals so that any person can find instruction in any study.

A unit of the CALS Office of Academic Programs, the Office of Student Services assists in managing and coordinating academic programs associated with CALS degree programs. As a CALS Office of Student Services team member, the CALS Inclusive Academic Advising Assistant Director performs a wide range of responsibilities related to student services, including academic resources, advising, records, and advocacy to CALS students, including supporting the mission to create, maintain, and protect the academic records of current and former students.

Position Summary

As part of the Office of Academic Programs and CALS Student Services, assists in the management and coordination of community and academic programs associated with CALS undergraduate degree programs. This service will be delivered in a team-based environment where each staff member will be expected to provide exceptional professionalism, foster collaboration and strive for premier customer service.

Overall, the Assistant Director will contribute to a forward-thinking academic advising support model designed to anticipate student needs and provide services for an enhanced student experience. This approach will leverage current technology, social media, teachable moments, and collaboration among students, families, staff, faculty, and alumni. By aligning resources to center student success, our support model will strengthen the collaborative advising network within CALS, ensuring a positive and enriching undergraduate experience.

It will also include advising undergraduate students on academic requirements and course selection; provide advice to students involved in difficult or sensitive situations; refer extreme cases to the Cornell Health center or Student Support and Advocacy Services (SSAS); support an enhanced and interactive advising system including on-going support to faculty and staff who work with CALS students.

The Assistant Director will be proactive using metrics and data available from electronic platforms; share knowledge and expertise with the team and promote working together toward a common vision; monitor students experiencing academic difficulties; provide advising to students who are not maintaining good academic standing; keep faculty advisors informed; develop programs to address student academic difficulty needs. 

Must maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and clearly understand the university and college policies, FERPA guidelines, compliance, and college graduation requirements. Comfort and familiarity with several technology platforms (ex: Outlook, People Soft, and Salesforce) is required for all staff working in CALS Student Services. Training and support will be ongoing and as needed for these platforms.

This position is located on the Ithaca campus, utilizing a hybrid weekly work schedule of up to 1 days remote and 4 days on campus during academic periods.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.

Proficiency in computer skills, report preparation, and analysis.

Strong discretion, judgement, and adherence to confidentiality standards.

Excellent communication skills to work effectively with students, parents, and families, providing guidance and support.

Ability to independently coordinate programs, manage activities, and prioritize tasks.

Organized, detail-oriented, and skilled at relationship building, with public speaking abilities to represent CALS to diverse audiences.

High integrity to establish trust with students, faculty, staff, and employers.

Proven ability to work in a team context and to set priorities, manage competing demands and to provide timely response to urgent issues.

Committed to ethical workplace practices and continuous process improvement in collaboration with supervisors.

Focused on stakeholder engagement and fostering a positive rapport with students and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of two years’ experience working in an educational setting, focusing on student engagement and program planning.

Knowledge of Cornell University and undergraduate programs.

Experience with Stellic, PeopleSoft and Salesforce.

Master’s Degree with minimum 3 years’ experience in an educational setting with students, in advising, community management and or in program planning.
