AARP’s Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. It delivers on AARP’s social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues that help give people financial and health security. AARP’s Campaigns Advocacy Outreach & Communications team seeks a motivated intern to join our fast-paced unit to assist with nationwide advocacy campaigns focused on caregiving, financial security, prescription drug affordability, long-term care, energy, housing, and more. This remote paid internship requires a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week starting in May 2025 and ending in December 2025, with the possibility of extending additional semesters. Responsibilities Create and update communication materials for federal and multistate campaigns Track and research news coverage of key issues nationally and in multiple states Manage channels on Microsoft Teams for advertising and polling projects Track and compile weekly reports to illustrate success and impact Build media influencer lists related to key issues for states and nationally Proofread campaign materials Contribute to the preparation of and participation in presentations Assist the team with special projects, such as writing responsive letters to the editor Qualifications Prospective interns must be enrolled in a degree program related to communications, journalism, political science, public relations, and/or marketing at an accredited college or university; be considered rising undergraduate juniors, seniors, or graduate students; and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship AARP also considers non-traditional interns looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers; this may include those who have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program The ideal candidate will be a quick learner who possesses careful attention to detail, is self-motivated, and can work independently and as part of a fast-paced team—the ability to meet tight and/or changing deadlines is key Must have a solid working knowledge of the Microsoft Office 365 environment, an understanding of news media, and experience tracking related data Previous experience in journalism and/or writing for public relations is preferred Familiarity with creating and editing graphics using Adobe or Canva is a plus Political and/or issue campaign experience is a plus AARP will not sponsor an employment visa for this position at this time. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories. Compensation and Benefits The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
