Support Staff are part-time, trained employees who assist individuals or groups with disabilities during programs or events. The role is to ensure the instructor or program leader can focus on the program as planned while maintaining a supportive and inclusive environment for those that need additional instruction or redirection. Support Staff facilitate participation by all individuals, ensuring they are fully included in activities.
Essential Job FunctionsIndividualized Support:
Provide one-on-one or group support as required by the needs of the participants and may vary be activity. This may involve assisting with tasks, behaviors, or communication to ensure participants can engage in the program without barriers.Assisting in Program Participation:
Act as a "shadow" for participants with disabilities, stepping in to support, when necessary, but allowing participant(s) to take part in activities independently, as possible.Inclusive Assistance: Adapt tasks and activities, as needed, to ensure meaningful participation for all attendees to foster an inclusive environment.Advocacy & Empowerment:
Advocate for the needs and abilities of individuals, emphasizing their strengths and focusing on their similarities to others, rather than highlighting differences. Support the dignity and independence of each participant.Promoting Social Interaction:
Encourage social interaction and the development of friendships between participants, enhancing self-esteem and fostering a sense of belonging.
Training & Knowledge:
Willingness to build knowledge in key areas such as Adapting Activities, Documentation & Communication, Behavior Management, Sensitivity to Disability and Diversity.Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to interact effectively with individuals with disabilities, other staff, and participants in a positive and supportive manner.Flexibility & Adaptability:
