Cancer Registry & Clinical Data Analyst

Reporting to the Cancer Support Services Manager, this position is responsible for assisting with the guidelines of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (ACOS). The incumbent retrieves patient records, analyzes charts and reports, and abstracts follow-up data into the automated cancer registry system.
Responsible for providing support to the department including picking up mail, copying and mailing forms, gathering patient data from various sources, and maintaining the filing system, planning community education programs and annual Cancer Survivor’s Day activities.
Cancer Conference Coordinates and prepares the agenda for the weekly Cancer Conference. Order food from dietary. Work with all the physicians involved in Cancer Conference to allow for fair presentation of cases. Sends out the agenda to all Cancer Conference attendees. Set up for Cancer Conference and attend to make sure all processes flow.
data collection Screens cases due for follow-up, conducts patient searches through chart review, EMRs, letter writing and direct telephone contact to the physician, patient and/or family member. This must be accomplished with a minimum 90% follow-up rate as required by the Commission on Cancer to ensure continued accreditation of the cancer program. Collects data for the cancer registry patients as needed.
data management Updates computerized files by documenting subsequent patient information from physician offices, the patient record, mortuaries and other sources to track subsequent disease recurrences, treatments and causes of death. data retrieval and analysis Prepares requests, retrieves appropriate data from Paragon; generates and maintains monthly follow-up control listings, monthly delinquent and lost to follow up lists, monitors results and outcomes of patient searches. Monitors and tracks key referral relationships and patient care pathways and provides recommendations to leadership for improved continuity of care. Any other projects that arise.
other duties Prepares quality reports from Cancer Abstracts to be reviewed. Assists with any preparation necessary for the Cancer Program Accreditation. Assists with Cancer Committee meeting and preparation as needed. Builds and maintains effective working relationships with others. Deals with patients, physicians, employees & visitors with sensitivity, courtesy, & respect. Contributes to professional growth through attendance and participation at approved continuing education seminars, workshops, inservice programs, and weekly cancer conference meetings. Perform other duties as assigned by Cancer Support Services Manager. Monitors State of Alabama Death listing for patient follow-up purposes.
confidentiality Protects the confidentiality of cancer patient data maintained within the registries. Releases cancer related registry information only to authorized persons, following written procedures. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information and adheres to departmental and hospital information privacy and security policies.
High school graduate with 1-2 yrs post high school education in rela ted field required . Associates degree preferred.
Previous Cancer Registry &/or hospital medical record experience preferred. Preferred knowledge & experience in use of computers, i.e. personal computers, keyboarding, Windows, Excel, word processing applications, etc.
Ability to read & comprehend written & oral instructions Basic analytical skills with ability to adhere closely to detail for up to 95% of work time Ability to multi-task Knowledge of basic office machines, i.e. copier, fax, phone.
