The Cardiac Exercise Specialist (CES) is a professional staff member of the cardiac care team. The CES may be responsible for independently conducting IP and OP cardiovascular stress testing including nuclear, stress echo and graded exercise testing. The physician indirectly supervises multiple procedures simultaneously shifting direct responsibility to the CES. The CES may also be responsible for operational and educational coordination of the Phase I and Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Care is provided to adult and geriatric customers.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
• Monitor inpatient and outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation
• Instruct customer education classes
• Communicate with customer’s physician regarding progress, change in condition and other customer concerns
Stress Testing
• Organization, preparation, and confirmation of upcoming customer test information
• Implement a specific exercise stress test protocol in healthy and unhealthy populations, based on an understanding of risk stratification
• Demonstrate an understanding of contraindications, risks, safety precautions, and end points of a stress test
Requirements
Education
• Bachelors or Masters degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Human Performance, Kinesiology, or Physical Education
Experience
Experience
• Minimum one year experience with cardiac customers in an acute care setting preferred
• Internship in stress testing/cardiac rehabilitation or related exercise field required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Strong understanding of cardiac pathophysiology, exercise physiology, EKG interpretation, arrhythmias, and medications
• Strong critical thinking skills
• Strong knowledge of cardiology procedures and medical terminology
• Physician relations skills
• Proficient in the Microsoft Office applications of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Basic computer literacy and the ability to learn new applications and systems
• Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects
• Ability to thrive in a dynamic, sometimes chaotic environment
Licensure/Certification
• American College of Sports Medicine Certification
Blaze Preferred
• BLS Certification
Community Standard
• ACLS Certification required within three (3) months of hire
