Cardiac Ultrasound Tech

PRN positions available.

Performs all adult and pediatric echocardiogram ultrasounds as directed by the Radiologist, Manager of Medical Imaging or the Senior Supervising Technologist. Recognizes the purpose of employment is to prioritize the patient as “number one (1)” and put forth utmost quality as a Staff Technologist. Performs all Vascular and general Ultrasound Procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Aids in scheduling Ultrasound examinations.

• Performs all Cardiac Ultrasound procedures/exams.

• Assists in transporting patients when necessary.

• Presents in-service according to schedule and provides documentation of the same to the Manager of Medical Imaging.

• Calls for service on maintenance of Ultrasound and other equipment as necessary.

• Cleans Ultrasound and other assigned equipment.

• Places patient at ease and explains to him/her what will be occurring and then performs initial evaluation of patient. Establishes patient I.D. and history with patient records. Builds rapport with patient so that he/she can feel staff concern. Should obtain accurate patient history while attempting to relieve patient anxiety.

• Demonstrates respect for patient modesty. Insures that patients are properly dressed. Explains to patients that all metal snaps and jewelry are to removed for a quality exam to be performed. Sees that patients are properly clothed and covered for exam.

• Positions each patient in a manner, which prevents unnecessary pain and discomfort. Each patient should be comfortable with his or her dignity preserved. Should be mindful of the patient’s condition and attitude.

• Ensures the quality of patient imaging by making the proper technical settings on the Ultrasound equipment used. Should always provide the Radiologist with quality diagnostic information, placing name, date, ordering physician, time, markers, and technologist’s initials, along with “Opelousas General Hospital Health System, Opelousas, Louisiana”.

• Completes allow work tasks with great consideration for time and quality of patient care. Should set personal goals to achieve maximum productivity with the utmost quality in patient care.

• Assists others in there work tasks if needed. Volunteers assistance in other areas of the Department if needed and makes the Department more productive while improving the quality of care given.

• Shows care in maintaining equipment that she/we works with so that quality examinations can be reproduced on a consistent basis. Reports any malfunctions to the Medical Imaging Manager, while removing this equipment from use, if necessary.

• Assists in keeping entire Department clean. Assists all staff members in keeping Department clean and observe all infection control policies and procedures.

• Exercises care in preparing set-up procedure trays and materials used in examinations. Used techniques and materials as approved by the Medical Director.

• Ensures that all employee/patient related incidents are reported to the Manager of Medical Imaging or the Senior Supervising Technologist.

• Ensures the reporting of potential safety hazards to assure patient and employee safety.

• Ensures the reporting of all allergic reactions to the Radiologist on duty immediately. Insures that all patient IV problems are reported to the patient’s charge nurse/radiology nurse/nursing supervisor.

• Performs and carries out other reasonable requests or duties which may be assigned from time to time.

• Pursues appropriate continuing education and obtains required education credits as mandated by credentialing organizations and OGHS to include CPR Certification.

• Participates in the collection of data for QC, QA, and JCAHO Planning. Additional responsibilities for specific QC duties on an as needed basis. Provides data and serves on a team as needed.

• Maintains knowledge of and observing universal precautions within the standards practice of care.

• The incumbent of this position is required to demonstrate competencies in all age categories.

• Utilizes, follows and refers to the Policy and Procedure Manual and Procedure Protocol of all modalities, as well as following the OGHS Employee Handbook of Personnel Policies.

Education: Certificate in Ultrasound Program required.

License/Certification: Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) preferred.
