Position Summary Be the Heartbeat of Innovation: Join Us as a Cardiology Perfusionist! Are you passionate about advancing veterinary cardiology and providing lifesaving support? The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University is looking for a skilled Cardiology Perfusionist to join our cutting-edge team. In this critical role, you’ll operate state-of-the-art perfusion equipment, collaborate with top cardiologists, and ensure the highest standard of care for our animal patients. If you’re detail-oriented, dedicated, and ready to be at the heart of groundbreaking treatments, we want you to help us save lives and make a difference every day! The cardiology/cardiovascular surgery service runs the only program for open heart surgery in animals in the western United States. Animals come to CSU from all over the USA and Canada for a variety of open-heart surgeries that are only performed here. The program performs about 1 open heart surgery per month. The open-heart surgery team includes faculty veterinary surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists and criticalists with advanced training and expertise in open heart surgery. The last critical member of the team is the perfusionist, whose job it is to run the heart-lung machine (i.e. cardiopulmonary bypass). In human medicine, the certified clinical perfusionist is a recognized clinical specialty requiring up to 4 years of specialty training in perfusion school. Because open heart surgery is not routinely performed in veterinary medicine, this expertise does not exist in veterinary medicine. Therefore in order to run an open heart surgery program we must bring in this expertise in from the outside. Given that we only perform open heart surgery on a monthly basis, we must turn to a local perfusionist who typically does this job full time for a human open heart surgery team. This person must have interest and willingness to step away from their regular duties at the local hospital to help us run our cases in animals. This position is a Certified Clinical Perfusionist who will come to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital to assist with the performance of open heart surgery in animals. The position is an hourly position that is active approximately 1 day per month. The frequency could increase as the program grows. This position can work no more than 19 hours per week. Required Job Qualifications + Certified Clinical Perfusionist including an appropriate Bachelor’s degree with extensive experience in performing cardiopulmonary bypass in human patients. + Demonstrated experience working with a veterinary open heart surgery team and experience to prioritize cases at the VTH on the agreed upon dates for open heart surgery. Preferred Job Qualifications + Experience working in performing cardiopulmonary bypass in very small human patients (i.e. neonates) and animals.
