About the Student Success and Engagement Department at Humber:

The Student Success and Engagement (SSE) team is a service-oriented portfolio with a mission to empower a diverse community of learners towards discovering their potential. SSE is comprised of Transition and Academic Support (Advising Career Services and Student Life and Learning), Student Wellness, Accessible Learning Services, Athletics and Recreation, and more. SSE aims to cultivate curiosity, resilience, confidence, and reflection in our learners, so that Humber students can thrive both within their academic pursuits and beyond.

About the Career Student Success Advisor Role:

The Career and Student Success Advisor is a proactive team member providing innovative and intentional academic and career advising to prospective and current students. This position contributes directly to the Polytechnic’s vision of building students’ capacity for brilliance, and supports learners by curating individualized support, refined employability skill, increasing institutional retention, persistence, and more. The incumbent must demonstrate a commitment to understanding, respecting, and engaging with diverse perspectives and identities through an intersectional lens, and must be skilled in addressing the needs of a diverse student population.

The incumbent applies theories of learning, student development and career development through individualized advising strategies and case management to successfully support students throughout their life cycle while at Humber. Through following professional best practices for academic and career advising, the incumbent works with students who have not yet declared a major program, who are seeking to change programs, or who are experiencing academic difficulty, and to other students as required. The incumbent will use a holistic approach grounded in development, intrusive and lifecycle theory and practice, designed to effectively address intersecting needs and support student success. This position will identify and support students at risk of attrition and provide early-intervention through proactive advising.

The incumbent must be adept at connecting a student’s academic choices to their career choices. This is done by focusing on students’ career development and preparation for the labour market through one-on-one coaching/advising, including: facilitating and interpreting personal interest/strengths and skills assessments; job search training; workshops and seminars; external marketing to employers; internal and community liaison; and ongoing labour market research. The incumbent then works with the student to form and clarify meaningful plans and set goals by developing individualized academic and career success plans that leverage available resources and campus support services.

The Career and Student Success Advisor collaborates closely with Faculties and service areas to strategically support student learning based on the specific and unique faculty needs. In addition, the Advisor must possess enough knowledge to support students in all faculties as part of the Hub and Spoke advising model. The incumbent will liaise with faculty and staff for the purpose of understanding issues, case conferencing to support an advisee, making meaningful referrals, and sharing information critical to creating a quality advising experience for students.

In addition, the Career and Student Success Advisor is responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering on-campus presentations, creating academic and career advising resources, or contributing to departmental initiatives and projects that meet faculty and student needs. The incumbent is expected to assist in training and demonstrating correct procedures and advising processes to fellow advisors on campus as they are connected to the institutional hub for advising.
