A Personal Care Assistant is an individual who provides support services to assist clients with personal, physical mobility and therapeutic care needs, as established by a rehabilitation health practitioner, social worker or other health care professional. The Personal Care Assistant may work in a variety of settings, to include home or schools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides services to persons who need help with day-to-day activitiesDemonstrates competence in performing the necessary skills and perform those skills on the plan of careProvides health care tasks, personal hygiene services, and other related support services essential to the client’s healthAssists with transfers and ambulationAids teacher in helping student learn and provides feedback to student and supervisors/teachers (if applicable)Performs incidental household services that are an integral part of a personal care plan (if applicable)In school setting, accompanies student on bus to and from school (if applicable)Provides companionship by reading, listening and talking with clientMay assist in supervision of students during recess and lunch periods and accompany student on community experiencesStrictly adheres to confidentiality requirementsAssists client in the development of independent skills through self-care activities such as toileting, clothing routines and personal hygieneImplements behavior management techniques in accordance with the directions given by the supervisor/healthcare practitioner; including reinforcing appropriate behaviors in accordance with plans and discouraging negative behavior, managing time out, or other techniques as directedAppropriately reports changes in client status or as directed by care planMaintains confidentiality of all information pertaining to clients, families and employeesAdheres to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) privacy policies and proceduresPerforms other duties as assigned/necessary


Minimum Requirements:

State licensure or certification as required by state and/or programOne (1) year relevant experience preferredCurrent BLS CardCurrent PPD or Chest X-RayKnowledge of child growth and developmentAbility to coordinate and facilitate services between the home, school, local health agency, and other community resourcesAbility to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language may be requiredComputer proficiency requiredMust be at least 18 years of age
