Women and minorities are under-represented in this job category and are encouraged to apply. *Job Demands:* This position is challenging, requiring self-motivation, advanced mental and physical stamina, and good decision-making skills. Work is conducted throughout Southwest Montana, across a diverse landscape. Montana is home to a wide variety of ungulates including elk, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, mule deer, white-tailed deer and bison. It also contains a full suite of predators including black bear, grizzly bear, mountain lion, wolf, coyote, bobcat, lynx, and wolverine. The applicant must be comfortable working in remote areas with this full complement of wildlife. The applicant must possess the ability to use bear spray, which must be carried at all times when in the field. The applicant must also be proficient with the use of firearms and the applicant must pass firearm bear safety training. The Carnivore Specialist will primarily conduct fieldwork for wolf monitoring and collaring activities that require extreme flexibility of work schedules, frequent travel within the region, driving for long periods of time, hiking in remote areas, and lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Working conditions are routinely hazardous. Exposure to potentially harmful animals, chemical agents and offensive sights and sounds are routine. Extreme caution and rigorous protocol must be followed to prevent exposure to serious injury indoors and outdoors. Exposure to outdoor hazards such as severe weather during extensive foot travel while carrying heavy packs in rough and remote terrain, use of a four-wheel drive truck, bicycles, ATVs, snowmachine, snowshoe, and XC skis is possible. In addition, work in and around aircraft may occur. The Carnivore Specialist will be expected to follow direction from the wildlife team, and at times use his/her own judgement in prioritizing and completing daily tasks independently and in a timely manner. Frequent public contacts include a diverse community of people ranging from landowners, hunters and wildlife enthusiast with differing concerns and views on wolves and wildlife in general. As a result, good conflict resolution skills and an ability to effectively interact with the public is necessary. The Carnivore Specialist will work closely with the other Carnivore Specialists and must possess good communication skills and be proactive in providing feedback on field activities. The Carnivore Specialist is expected to work successfully both independently and in a team setting. Lodging accommodations in the field will be varied and may consist of staying in cabins, camper trailers or tents for extended periods of time. A work vehicle will be provided. No lodging accommodations or vehicle will be provided for the incumbent when off duty. The position is based out of region 3. Field work will be conducted in a variety of locations throughout southwest Montana including regions 5 and 7 in central and eastern Montana. This requires that the Carnivore Specialist maintain flexibility in work schedules and spend extended periods of time away from their home base. Field work involves extended days in the field, up to 14 days during any given work hitch, requiring the ability to stay in the field overnight during that time. This is a full-time position, with field work occurring throughout the year. Candidate must be able to work long days, up to 14 hours, with a flexible and varied schedule including weekends and nights in sometimes adverse environmental conditions. Work schedules will loosely be 5 days on followed by 2 days off but may vary as needed by demands of the job. *Job Duties:* The purpose of this position is to implement a proactive reduction of wildlife/human conflicts, including those involving bears, wolves, mountain lions, furbearers and ungulates with an emphasis on wolf management. The carnivore specialist will collect and assemble population information on those species and make recommendations for management of those species to area biologists and regional managers. The primary role of this position is to capture and collar wolves. Additional duties include the use of GPS and radio-collars on wolves for monitoring survival/mortality, observations of movements and behavior, reproductive performance, ground scouting surveys for wolf presence, the collection of biological samples, and remote camera surveying. Routine job duties require proficiency with GPS, compass, telemetry, and map orienteering to monitor wolf activity. The specialist will capture, chemically immobilize, and tag wolves with VHF and/or GPS transmitters, monitor survival and movements of radio-collared animals from the ground and possibly aerially, release incidentally captured nontarget species, euthanize injured wildlife when appropriate and other field-related tasks. The Carnivore Specialist will collect biological samples from animals, including blood, hair, tissue, scat, or skeletal parts, and may investigate death sites of animals. This position will respond to, evaluate and take effective action on animal depredation and public safety problems and concerns; identify and make recommendations for long-term management of particular species that present consistent and ongoing problems; assist with multi-agency efforts to coordinate public education and response; and instruct the public on techniques that will prevent or alleviate potential wildlife/human safety problems. The carnivore specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing a program that focuses on minimizing wildlife/human conflicts, managing sustainable populations, conserving habitat and assisting private citizens and industry by providing technical assistance. The primary tools will be education, leadership and application of the best available science. The Carnivore Specialist will maintain organized field notes and data forms, and analyze the data collected to interpret information for reports used in making program decisions. The Carnivore Specialist will be responsible for troubleshooting and solving basic problems they encounter during fieldwork, while respecting the plans made for them by the supervising Wildlife Manager as well as the limitations of their equipment and abilities. The Wildlife Management Specialist will be responsible for ensuring data is collected responsibly. Animal handling activities will be conducted professionally and ethically, demonstrating respect for captured animals. The Wildlife Management Specialist will interact with the public and coworkers in a professional manner, respecting differences of opinion and seeking to resolve conflicts in an equitable manner. The Wildlife Management Specialist will work with the public, landowners, hunters, university personnel, federal and state land managers, non-profit organizations, and the media to coordinate projects. This job demands respect as well as excellent sociability with teammates and the public. *Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):* The knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, or a closely related field and two years of job-related work experience.
