In accordance with a detailed cleaning plan, the Custodian performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe and pleasant physical environment. Examples of additional work to be performed include but are not limited to snow and ice removal, clean up associated with water or fire damage and special event support. S/he is expected to clean up to 28,000-35,000 square feet of cleanable space per eight hour work day. Using standard tools, equipment, materials, and supplies of the trade and observance of all safety rules, regulations, and precautions, the custodian reports directly to one of the Custodial Supervisors and has additional duties that include, but are not limited to:
Clean bathrooms to support University operations as assigned and/or as scheduled - cleaning of toilets, urinals, bathtubs, shower stalls, shower curtains top to bottom, shower walls top to bottom, grout, bathroom floors, walls and partitions top to bottom.
Clean hallways, entranceways, stairways and elevators, as well as vacuum and spot clean carpets and upholstery, free carpets of rips and strings, tape down clean edges as needed, and clean all surfaces and remove water marks and smudges from all surfaces.
Clean elevator tracks, sweep and mop floors free of debris and dirt, clean stairwells, landings, stairways, exterior entrances, ramps and landings, and other areas as assigned.
Clean administrative spaces, laboratories and classrooms, removing litter from planters and other spaces and items as assigned.
Ensure economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University and department resources.
Draw and /or requisitions supplies, parts, and materials needed, using such items economically to avoid undue costs.
Keep supervisor informed of supply and material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained, providing advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools, and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.
Ensure security of keys and pagers assigned and maintains security while in possession of keys and pagers, returning keys, pagers, or other assigned items at end of shift and immediately notifies supervisor of any unaccounted for items.
Requirements and Qualifications
HS Diploma or GED preferred
One year of custodial work experience is preferred
Valid and current driver’s license from Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia
Basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures
Ability to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center and complete a training program in building cleaning.
