Summary This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Engineer, Construction Division, Construction Branch. The incumbent performs duties as a Cement Finisher Helper in new construction and renovation projects in assigned Jurisdictions. As a Helper, performs routine and less complex cement finishing duties associated with the occupational trade. Responsibilities *** This position is temporary in nature and is not to exceed 13 months. This is strictly a temporary appointment where there is no permanent need or permanent funding available for the work involved. It is a position that is subject to the project needs of the Agency. Therefore, the appointment could be terminated at any time due to shortage of work or shortage of funds without any advance notice. If project work continues however, it could be extended beyond the 13-month time frame at the sole discretion of the Agency. As a non-permanent employee, you may also be separated for failure to meet management’s expectations, with no advance notice. *** Day Shift (4:00 A.M. - 2:30 P.M) Monday thru Thursday. Hours May Change Due To Operational Needs of Management As a Helper, performs routine and less complex cement finishing duties associated in the Cement Finishing occupational trade and as described in the duties of the vacancy announcement. The selectee will not be required to perform all duties listed at the time of hire but will have the opportunity to learn and perform progressively more difficult tasks gradually assigned by the supervisor or senior employee. Work will be reviewed for compliance with instructions. Duties: Assists journey-level cement finishers by performing maintenance, repair and construction work on surfaces such as sidewalks, steps, walls, curbs and ramps. Assists with mixing, pouring, spreading and leveling cement and concrete. In repairing damaged areas, removes broken concrete and prepares sub-surfaces. Prepares job sites by setting up safety tripods and scaffolding; may secure confined space job sites. Removes old concrete; sets forms; mixes, places and finishes new concrete. Places steel dividers and other expansion joints in sidewalks; lays drainpipes in cement; smooths and levels cement surfaces using trowels and other tools; and applies a finishing coat of cement to surfaces of streets, sidewalks, bridge work and other concrete work. Measures dimensions to calculate quantities of materials needed. Designs and constructs various forms prior to pouring cement using precise measurements and modern equipment and techniques. Performs mixing and applying toppings, colors, grout, epoxy overlays, or waterproofing compounds in accordance with job specifications. Performs framing work, including placing and finishing curbs, sidewalks, gutters, disability access ramps and various other concrete structures. Participates in demolition of concrete structures with the proper use of pneumatic tools, such as chipping gun, jackhammer, concrete saw, and other power equipment Utilizes a thorough knowledge of and compliance with applicable AOC and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is utilized. Performs other related duties as assigned.
