About the unit

William Beaumont University Hospital is a Level I Trauma, Academic Medicine facility. The Central Processing Department (CPD) supports Surgical Services, as well as other departments by providing sterile instrumentation for surgical and other procedures. CPD Technicians maintain and sterilize a variety of instrumentation from surgical specialties such as Open Heart, Neurosurgery and Robotic procedures. The CPD Technician is the first point in care of the surgical patient by ensuring sterile instrumentation in good working order. As such, the CPD Technician must have knowledge of complex instrumentation and the industry standards, as well as staying abreast of everchanging technology of surgical instrumentation.

Scope of work

Assists in overseeing and directing/precepting the workflow of the Central Processing Technician students and CPD Tech I's duties as well as equipment and supply issues in work area in accordance with established policies, procedures and Association of Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards. Provides input into the staff evaluations and assists with staff development on shift, as appropriate. Acts as a role model and resource to peers and other members of the health care team related to processing of equipment, instruments, and supplies.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent Required2 years of relevant experience.  Sterile processing technician experience or related sterile processing RequiredSuccessful completion of sterile processing program (internal or external) RequiredCertified Sterile Processing Distribution Tech (CSPDT) – CBSPD - Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution Upon Hire Required OrRegistered Central Services Technician, Certified (CRCST) – IAHCSMM - International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management Upon Hire Required
