Position Overview:
SUMMARY (BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB)Decontaminate, assemble and sterilize surgical instrumentation. Performs all decontamination functions for surgical instrumentation and equipment using proper infection control techniques. Follows manufacturer's recommendations and AAMI, AORN, and Joint Commission standards. Performs the assembly of surgical instrumentation and equipment and prepares them for sterilization. Able to utilize features of computerized tray tracking system. Correctly selects appropriate sterilizer method and parameters. Assembles surgical case carts. Maintains clean and safe work environment. Manages instrument inventory to assure timely distribution of instruments to the operating room. Precepts new employees and acts as a resource person.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation: High school diploma or equivalency.
Experience: One year related experience. CRCST or certified through national sterile processing program recognized by New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSPrepares instruments for decontamination by properly sorting and selecting correct process to assure integrity and prevent damage to rigid instruments, power instruments, flexible scopes, and any surgical equipment being processed. Prepares instrumentation for exposure of all surfaces to decontamination process by flushing and opening all lumens, disassembling and opening all items, and properly loading of mechanical washers. Follows all manufacturer's recommendations as required. Wears appropriate PPE equipment in the performance of the decontamination process as outlined in the department policies and procedures.Operates all washers, sterilizers, sonics, and all other equipment in a proper and safe manner. Employs appropriate safe use of all cleaning agents and chemicals. Follows manufacturer's instructions for operation of all equipment located within the department including washers, sonics, Sterrad, Steris, and flash sterilizers. Performs biological and diagnostic tests on sterilizers and provides accurate timely documentation of results. Notifies supervisor of any malfunctions and initiates repairs as needed.Appropriately triages instrumentation and equipment to meet customer needs. Communicates effectively status of instrumentation and equipment to customers.Inspects instruments and assures they are free of bio-burden and in proper working condition prior to assembling sets. Initiates repairs and performs required maintenance as needed.Assembles correctly sets following count sheets, replaces missing instrumentation, and identifies missing items as appropriate and notifies supervisor immediately regarding critical items.Wraps, packs, and labels all items correctly in accordance with department polices and procedures. Uses correct selection of appropriate sterilization method and sterilization parameters. Uses the appropriate indicators and integrators for the method selected. Loads sterilizer carts correctly and records all items on log. Labels items correctly and signs all work produced.Assembles case carts with correct items following PPF. Checks off items placed on cart and indicates items missing. Places heavy items on top shelf and solutions on bottom shelf. Places clean cover on cart and attaches PPF. Signs off on all work produced. Assures cart is clean and in good condition. Initiates any repairs as needed.Maintains, cleans, and signs off all assigned areas according to schedule. Rotates supplies and trays to assure oldest items are used first. Verifies integrity of sterile packaging materials of stored items. Monitors any expiration dates and removes expired items. Cleans and stocks work station at end of shift.Monitors, prepares, replenishes, and rotates stock to maintain proper levels of surgical instrumentation and stock. Monitors inventory of department specific supplies and notifies supervisor when levels are getting low and replacement is needed.Organizes and keeps up to date specialty instrument lists. Evaluates proper levels of instrument supply and replacement stock. Communicates to Supervisor need for orders.Participates in processing and tracking of loaner instrumentation. Obtains as needed and follows loaner instrumentation guidelines. Communicates status of loaner items to all appropriate parties.Instructs and assists new employees in learning departmental practices and procedures in preparation of instrumentation.
