  PART TWO: FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

 

Position Objective The Central Sterile Technician will be responsible for the medical/surgical supplies and equipment, both sterile and nonsterile, and for their cleaning, preparation, processing, storage, and delivery for patient care. The head CSR tech will maintain certification in the field of Central Sterile and will be responsible for directing the day to day operation of the department. Techs working under the direction of the head CSR tech will be encouraged to seek certification in their specialty.

 

Performance Expectation Replenishes department inventory and determines daily needs. Processes equipment from all hospital and clinic patient care areas. Accurately deciphers and implements FDA mandated manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFU). Determines each medical device classification per Spaulding Scale. Decontaminates medical devices and verifies complete removal of residual soils by inspection or utilizing Channel Check procedure for flexible and semi flexible scopes. Reprocesses complex flexible and semi flexible scopes. Determines proper leak testing, decontamination and high level disinfection or sterilization of each complex medical device. Operates equipment in all areas of Central Sterile (ultrasonic washer, washer disinfector, detergent dispenser, Sterrad, autoclaves and Evotech). Inspects, tests, assembles medical devices and recognizes and identifies specialty area for each reprocessed medical device. Determines proper packaging, chemical indicator and indicator tape selection based on sterilization process, medical device size and configuration. Creates custom sterilization pouch, using heat sealing technique. Demonstrates proper sterilized medical device handling per AAMI and packaging device recommendations. Performs biological indicator selection and incubation process per hospital policy. Maintains all corresponding medical records for traceability per AAMI, FDA, CDC and Hospital requirements. Performs all QA requirements (Washer efficiency testing, Ultrasonic efficiency testing, Autoclave daily and weekly maintenance, QA monitoring of department temperature and humidity conditions, etc.). Interprets machine cycle printouts for proper cycle parameters. Initials and records required information and notifies manager of questionable operation or failure. Serves as the instrumentation resource to other members of the Surgical team Knowledge of departmental guidelines and regulations including, but not limited to: AAMI, IAHCSMM, AORN, SGNA, FDA, EPA, OSHA, and CMS. Maintains process for loaner equipment Identifies opportunities to improve within the unit and assists with the application of these opportunities.
