   Position Summary 

Responsible to ensure that all surgical instruments, and equipment are properly inventoried, decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed, and tracked in a timely and high-quality manner for the corresponding department. Work independently with minimal supervision and serve as a resource to the Operating Room and Ancillary customers.

 Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:   Understands and adheres to the WPH and CSPD Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. Demonstrates/articulates an understanding of the responsibilities of the position. Attends staff meeting or equivalent to update knowledge related to current department/hospital issues. Complete annual department/hospital competency requirements through Net-Learning. Adhere to all WPHC policies and procedures, including dress code, code of conduct, customer service, attendance, and submission of annual physical. Identifies and uses appropriate methods and solutions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize instruments. Ensure that sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaners, instrument washers/disinfectors, and cart washers are regularly inspected, tested, and well-documented to ensure proper functioning. Assemble, protect, wrap, containerize and/or peel pack, and label instruments according to count sheets. Check instruments for cleanliness and functionality prior to sterilization and properly handles and stores sterile supplies, equipment, and instruments. Selects appropriate sterilization methods. Knows and follows correct principles of sterilization. Properly documents and verifies sterilization chemical, physical and biological indicators to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process. Retrieves, disburses, and tracks medical and surgical supplies and equipment in a quality and timely manner. Knows, uses, maintains, and operates the equipment specific to CSPD, i.e. Low/High temp sterilizers, cart washers; washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, and heat sealers as well as a variety of testing devices. Understand the processes involved in requesting, ordering, receiving, stocking, rotating, delivering, and monitoring usage of surgical supplies. Maintain a clean and orderly work area, complete daily assignment duties, and serve as a resource to customers on all Central Sterile Processing functions. Performs other related job duties requested by CSPD Coordinator based on department needs. Tracks his/her progress and compliance in regard to training, staff meeting and in-service education, etc. Applies knowledge of current methods of infection control. Operates and troubleshoots cleaning equipment. Appropriately handles biohazardous material maintaining safety standards. Performs all other related duties as assigned.  Education & Experience Requirements    High School Diploma or GED required. Entry level Central Sterile instrument processing experience preferred. Provisional Certification Required. 400 hours certification training recommended. Familiarity with medical terminology and anatomy preferred.

Must demonstrate skill competencies done every year and maintain 12 points CEUs at year.  Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment   Employees may be exposed to chemicals required to perform their tasks. Any hazardous chemicals that employees may encounter are listed in the hospital's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database, which can be accessed through the hospital's intranet site under Employee Tools/SDS Access. A copy of the SDS database is also available at the hospital switchboard and saved on a disc. Must be able to lift and transport heavy objects weighing 25-50 lbs. and stand for extended periods to perform job duties safely and effectively. Must have the ability to concentrate for extended periods of time required for the position frequently. Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions. Must be able to focus despite distractions and interruptions. Must be able to organize, prioritize and execute multiple tasks. Must be flexible and able to adapt to changes in routine. Work requires attention to detail and requires mental/visual acuity. Must be able to detect object close and far away and sounds with background noise. Must have the ability to distinguish between dull and sharp items and properly dispose. Must be able to identify malfunctioning equipment.  Primary Population Served

Salary Range: $40,836.90-$61,255.16 (based on Full Time employment)
