Central Utility Plant Operator

Amentum is seeking a Central Utility Plant Operator for our operations and maintenance team in Richmond, VA.
This position works a rotating shift that consists of:
1. 7 days on 1st shift:
Saturday, Sunday, Monday; 5:00am – 5:15pm
Tuesday – Friday, 7:15am – 6:15pm
1. 7 days off
1. 7 days on 3rd shift:
Saturday, Sunday, Monday; 5:00pm – 5:15am
Tuesday – Friday, 6:00pm – 5:15am
This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the Central Utility Plant (CUP) equipment and systems
for a large research facility. Assists craft technicians in other facility maintenance trades and services.
Monitors building automation system (Metasys) to ensure proper operation of air handling equipment, chillers,
boilers, exhaust fans, energy recovery units, etc. Monitors room temperatures and humidity set points, performs
equipment startup and shutdown procedures, and verifies normal operating conditions. Adjusts as necessary as
needs change.
Identifies and corrects problems with the CUP equipment, takes daily chiller and boiler readings, and submits
reports as required to meet local and state requirements. Maintains/performs preventive maintenance and
building rounds.
May coordinate and oversee subcontractor activities and work and instruct lower classified technicians when
required. Performs normal housekeeping duties as they pertain to the work and/or shop area.
Essential Functions:
Identifies and corrects problems with the CUP equipment such as boilers, chillers, chilled water and
condenser pumps, air compressors and cooling towers.
Monitors building automation systems to ensure proper operation of facilities equipment. Monitors room
temperatures and humidity set points for labs, office and common areas.
Performs equipment startup and shutdown procedures, and verifies normal operating conditions. Makes
adjustments as necessary.
Takes daily chiller and boiler readings. Submits reports as required to meet local and state requirements.
Experience working with steam systems (e.g. high pressure steam boilers), centrifugal chillers, air handling
units, cooling towers, air compressors, air dryers, heat exchangers, exhaust systems, VAV pneumatic
controls, and building automation control systems.
Performs water treatment chemical analysis.
Maintains/performs Preventative Maintenance schedules and building routes/rounds.
Repairs piping systems including pumps, motors, and valves.
Troubleshoots electrical control circuits and has the ability to read schematics.
Responds and provides service and feedback to the customer while assuring compliance to codes,
regulations and industry standards.
Complies with all governmental, company, and industrial regulations, codes, and standards, health safety
practices, and permit systems.
Provides training to other team members to ensure continued customer support during an absence and to
teach specialized skills and techniques.
Reads and interprets work from drawings, work orders, sketches, blueprints, and technical manuals.
Performs preventive maintenance as scheduled in the Computerized Maintenance Management System
(CMMS) through the use of a mobile device.
Recommends measures to improve maintenance methods and equipment performance.
Understands company policies and enforces safety regulations.
Safely performs functions of the position including following proper company safety guidelines, such as
lockout/tagout, confined space, and hot work procedures, and wearing PPE as required.
Demonstrates attention to detail, good comprehensive and analytical skills, and excellent organizational
skills.
Maintains a strict schedule in order to be successful in the assignment, yet demonstrates flexibility in the
day-to-day activities and scheduling for the benefit of the customer.
Other duties as assigned by Management or Lead.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or demonstrated equivalent.
Five years of experience as an industrial HVAC or industrial mechanical maintenance technician, or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience working in an industrial maintenance environment
Ability to obtain a security access badge at our client’s location.
Must be willing to work overtime, holidays, various shifts, weekends, and alternative work schedules.
Hiring Team
This position may require a valid Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements:
Requires the ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs.
Requires the ability to regularly climb extension ladders, roof ladder, stepladders, and stairs at least 10
times during shift.
Requires the flexibility to bend/stoop, squat repetitive during shift.
Requires the ability to regularly kneel repetitive for shift.
Requires the ability to move in a 90-degree fashion on a repetitive basis for shift.
Requires the ability to stretch/reach on a repetitive basis for shift.
Requires the ability to walk extensively throughout the plant during shift.
Requires the use of a Company/Client approved utility knife.
Requires the ability to differentiate colors pertaining to wire color-coding.
Some tasks will require repetitive wrist movement.
Requires the ability to interact with all clients in a professional and friendly manner despite periods of
stress.
Wear steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats and other Personal Protective Equipment as
needed.
Cope with demands (stressors) that are associated with the job and/or the work environment so that
acceptable levels of performance and overall contribution are maintained.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Requirements
Training and experience in building automation system, Metasys.
Experience supervising vendors and on-site contractors.
Ability to read dials, gauges, monitor equipment, and log data.
Ability to read and understand instructions, repair manuals, specifications, drawings, and schematic
diagrams.
Ability to troubleshoot problems and recommend solutions.
Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and following standard operating procedures.
Experience working with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
Active Journeyman or Master level license.
