Position Summary:
Research Technology Services (RTS) at New York University is looking for a Senior Storage
Engineer to assist with the implementation and operation of an on-premise Ceph storage
cluster. Duties will include configuring services such as the Ceph file system and RADOS object gateway, investigating performance issues, and planning future hardware acquisition to grow the existing cluster.
Principal Duties:
The Universitys High Speed Research Network (HSRN) has provisioned an on-premise Ceph storage cluster to support a compute cluster, primarily by providing RADOS Block Device (RBD) volumes. We are now looking to expand this storage cluster to support further use cases by growing its capacity (currently at 12 petabytes) and offer storage to a wider audience. A critical component of this new offering is a Ceph distributed file system (CephFS) that will be mounted on Linux machines.
-Assist with the deployment and configuration of CephFS
-Monitor for issues and performance concerns with the file systems, clients, or the
underlying infrastructure
-Integrate Ceph with our backup solution
-Advise and monitor the integration of the file system with HPC compute machines
running Linux
-Write documentation for the cluster and its setup both for internal use (for cluster
administrators) and external use (for our end-users, the researchers using the file
system for various research activities)
-Analyze researchers use cases and help them adjust their workflow or tune the system
towards their goals
Required Qualifications:
At least one year experience with Ceph and the Ceph file system is required. Advanced
knowledge of Linux system administration and performance monitoring is required.
Excellent verbal, analytical, project management and technical problem solving skills. Ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience. Strong work ethic to collaborate as a group, but also can carry a project to its end with minimal direction on your own.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of networking concepts such as the OSI model, DNS, firewalls, proxies, load
balancing is required. Advanced concepts like BGP, VXLAN, and the Cisco/ARISTA/SONiC
platforms are a plus.
Experience with programming languages such as C, C+, Golang, Rust is desirable.
Experience with Kubernetes and CSI plugins is a plus.
Familiarity with the Prometheus/Grafana monitoring stack is a plus.
