Certified Clinical Coder I, II, or III
Overview Applies the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing. Qualifications CERTIFIED CLINICAL CODER I EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and less than one year of specialized training or education. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT One year of paid work experience (need not be related to medical coding is required) CERTIFIED CLINICAL CODER II EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and less than one year of specialized training or education. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT One (1) year full-time paid experience as a certified medical/clinical coder. Three (3) years full-time paid experience as a non-certified medical/clinical coder may be substituted for the one year as a certified medical/clinical coder. CERTIFIED CLINICAL CODER III EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and less than one year of specialized training or education. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT Three (3) years full-time paid experience as a certified medical/clinical coder. No substitutions. COMPUTER SKILLS An individual should have knowledge of Database, Internet, Spreadsheet, and Word Processing software. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Credential in medical coding from recognized nationally accrediting agency, i.e., American Health Information Management Association (CCS or CCS-P) or American Academy of Professional Coders (CPC). OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES None required. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Employee must not and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
