Job Description:

The Student Health Care Center at The University of Florida within the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine (CHFM) is seeking a Medical Assistant for its ambulatory clinic. The incumbent will assist healthcare professionals in the examination and treatment of ambulatory patients, such as preparing patients and the environment for treatment, acquiring knowledge of conducting basic laboratory and electrocardiogram tests, caring for patients' post-treatment, and performing functions. They will perform Point-of-Care testing as directed and will be responsible for the general cleanliness of desks, counters, examination tables, and equipment, ensuring appropriate cleaning, packaging (wrapping), and sterilizing surgical instruments.  The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will assist the team RNs with patient care, obtaining vital signs, visual screening, heights and weights, peak flow readings, and other objective data appropriate for incoming patients and will also assist clinicians with special procedures and examinations.

General Clinical Duties:

Performs CMA duties under the direct supervision of the Team RN and the responsibility of a Physician. Standards Universal Precautions. Defers all medical questions to the RNs and/or medical providers. Check Daily Temperature logs. Maintain and daily inventory of routine supplies and special items needed for the procedure room and ensure the update of sterile supplies. Apply infection control guidelines in the clinic setting. Application of age-specific care to clinical practice. Emergency equipment use clinic–specific emergency response plan. Assist in exams. Exam room preparation-stocking rooms. Clean /sterilize equipment and exam rooms. Basic patient instructions per provider-approved handouts. Telephone messaging. Alert team RNs or providers of any abnormal findings. Performs point-of-care tests as requested. Assists providers with procedures (minor surgery/pelvic exams). Assists RNs with observation of patients. Serves as a chaperon. Transports patients requiring assistance. Maintains patient confidentiality following SHCC policy. Responsible for obtaining and documenting vital signs (BP, P, R, T) in the EHR at every patient visit. Weight & height initial visit; and/or visual acuity and peak flow (if indicated).

Medical Administration Duties:

Pend and call in prescriptions. Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician. Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physician’s instructions to patients.

Medication administration which may include the following (except IV):

Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies. Work through the Epic In-Basket Non-vaccine IM & SC injections (No dose calculations allowed) Immunizations Oral medications-simple dose calculations allowed TST (PPD)administration and reading of the result Eye Drops Nebulizer Treatment

Procedures:

Sterile dressings Sterile technique Phlebotomy –routine, clinic-specific Remove sutures/staples Specimen collection and processing Ear irrigations

Other duties as assigned:

Routinely re-stocked exam rooms, cleaned exam rooms including desks, exam tables, and counters, and kept rooms neat throughout the day. Assists with ordering supplies and equipment and restocking reserves as needed. Assists with the orientation and training of clinical staff for the organization, including the screening process, patient flow, instrument care, and autoclave operations. Performs EKG’s in the Radiology department during athlete’s physical exams PRN. Expected to huddle daily with RN, Physician, and staff to anticipate and plan the Team’s needs; communicate with co-workers in a respectful and courteous manner. Rotates to other areas of the SHCC, provides Break Week/ Sundays coverage in WHCC, SHCC@ Shands, SMAC, and Infectious Care, and performs other tasks as assigned. Attends and participates in the staff monthly meeting.

Clinic Hours and Schedule Information: The clinic is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday clinic during the fall and spring semesters. Scheduled hours and days can vary according to the SHCC’s needs.

Expected Salary:

The salary range is between $19.65 and $22.65 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

Successful completion of the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam offered by an appropriate accredited institute. Appropriate institutes include the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), and the National Health Career Association (NHA)

Preferred Qualifications: Licensure and Certification: Certified Medical Assistant & Basic Life Support A high school diploma and one year of appropriate experience.  Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may be substituted at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision The SHCC is open Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, and Sundays in the fall and spring semesters Basic patient care knowledge Basic computer skills Sterile techniques skills Working knowledge of services functions and policies and confidentiality procedures. Basic math skills CPR certification and application knowledge Skills and knowledge of maintaining patient care equipment in operative order. Ability to communicate efficiently in writing and verbally. Ability to interact with patients.  Ability to take vital signs (e.g., TPR, Blood Pressure, visual acuity, peak flow meters, height and weight). Ability to give equipment instructions to patients. Ability to perform point-of-care lab tests and run quality controls. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
