JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the healthcare provider, the Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for delivering patient care that promotes the safety and wellbeing of all patients. This includes accurately performing preliminary physical tests such as measuring blood pressure, recording weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, and other measures as directed by established clinical protocols.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Communicates professionally and effectively, both verbally and nonverbally, with patients, families, medical staff, colleagues, vendors, and other departments to promote continuity of care, enhance clinic image, and ensure high-quality service.

Provides positive and professional customer service in all interactions with patients, staff, and visitors.

Utilizes strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships with healthcare team members, patients, and families.

Respects patient confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA guidelines and regulations at all times.

Participates in staff development activities and orientation as requested.

Acts as a patient advocate, addressing concerns and resolving issues proactively.

Maintains current CPR certification.

Follows equipment maintenance protocols, identifies problems, and coordinates repairs as needed.

Operates office equipment (fax, copier, phone, computer) efficiently.

Collaborates effectively as a team member in the clinic.

NURSING/PCT DUTIES:

Recognizes and assesses emergency needs of patients, initiating appropriate emergency procedures when necessary.

Demonstrates knowledge of various payer regulations and adheres to those guidelines.

Facilitates interdisciplinary communication, collaborating with healthcare team members to assess and analyze patient data.

Assesses patient and family learning needs and provides accurate information to patients and their families.

Evaluates patient and family understanding of the treatment plan and/or instructions.

Maintains proper aseptic techniques.

Accurately documents all patient interactions in the medical record.

Reports important information to patients and healthcare team members.

Performs basic clinical duties, such as rooming patients, taking vital signs, measuring height and weight, and collecting patient data as assigned.

Assists with minor procedures, collects and labels lab specimens according to protocol, and performs basic lab and clinic testing (e.g., EKG, glucometer, tympanometry, spirometry).

Transports patients as needed.

Assists with room preparation between patient visits.

Communicates changes or updates regarding patients' conditions to the clinical team.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Provides cross-coverage in other clinic areas as needed.

Maintains supply inventory and stocks supplies in various work areas.

Participates in Performance Improvement activities as appropriate.

Keeps work area clean and organized.

Performs miscellaneous office duties (e.g., copying, filing, retrieving films/medical records).

Assists with nursing chart audits.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Completion of one of the following:

75-hour/120-hour Certified Nursing Assistant Program

136-hour Certified EMT Program

Accredited Medical Assistant Program

Accredited Radiography Technology Program (for limited radiography) and State of Iowa Limited Radiographer Certification

High school diploma or GED - Required

Must be at least 18 years of age - Required

CPR certification (must be obtained within 6 months of start date) - Required
