Certified Medical Assistant - North Clinic (1.0 FTE)

The Certified Medical Assistant (MA) has achieved their MA certification, can function independently of their preceptor, and is responsible to provide general direct and indirect patient care duties, in the clinic setting, under the direct supervision of a provider. The certified medical assistant will not triage patients, will not provide care prior to provider evaluation, will not provide care they are not competent in doing, will not advise patient without direct provider instruction, and will not identify as a “nurse”. All staff is considered first to be an employee of St. Peter’s Medical Group first. Because of this, there is an expectation that they may float to other SPHMG areas when not needed in assigned area.

The Certified Medical Assistant has completed the below criterion to obtain this level:

Able to successfully room for 16 patients, while completing an average of 30 indirect patient care tasks daily (i.e. medication referrals, in-basket messages, work queues right fax) Begin to learn specialty specific tasks – for instance, catheterizing patients, immunization administration, POCT, correct placement of Holter monitor, EKGs, casting, and other duties deemed necessary for specific areas.

EDUCATION: National Certification from an accredited medical assistant program required. Maintains knowledge, skills, and abilities through ongoing education and on-the-job training. Required to complete and pass annual competency training. Must have completed all requirements for Medical Assistant level.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY: Current National Certified Medical Assistant designation required, valid and current Basic Life Support certification and re-certification every two years.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: 1 year of healthcare experience preferred. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Intake of patient, verification and recording of pertinent clinical data and health data, clinical quality measures, update medical record; administer appropriate screening tools, while providing excellent patient care.  Able to prioritize workload, respond to patient calls and messages in accordance with policy.  Able to teach and model our core values. Document appropriate correspondence, assessments and care in patient’s EMR. Use interventions and strategies that are appropriate to the population by taking into account culture, language, age, gender and other factors. Demonstrates knowledge of the certified medical assistant scope of practice, incorporating elements of holistic patient centered team based care.  Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to ensure functionality of practice operations to provide excellent patient care. Monitor practice schedule for changes or updates.  Collaborate with care team, assist with walk-in, and scheduled clinic visits. Monitor environment for compliance with continual accreditation readiness.    Guide patients through the health care system and help patients arrive at scheduled appointments on time and prepared. Provide emotional support related to the patient’s clinical situation in accordance with the patient’s plan of care. Serve as a patient advocate and assist patients in navigation along the care continuum with the goal of facilitating effective quality care and timeliness, resulting in improved patient satisfaction and outcomes. Assist with referrals of patients to the appropriate specialist for diagnosis or treatment.
