Certified Pathologists' Assistant

HNL Lab Medicine is seeking a Certified Pathologists’ Assistant to join our team in Allentown, PA.  Our lab is a full-service laboratory servicing central and eastern Pennsylvania, including Lehigh Valley Health Network and multiple additional surgery centers and outpatient physician practices and clinics.  

Our team consists of 11 PAs, 6 grossing techs, and 30 Pathologists with approximately 70,000 cases a year ranging from biopsies to large multi-organ cancer resections.  We rotate to four hospitals within the Lehigh Valley and work out of our central laboratory in Allentown, PA.

Our position does not require weekend rotations, no on call hours, and no autopsy rotations.  We receive 1 week of CME time and $2,000 of CME money per year.  Additionally, we have PTO and sick time, great health insurance plans including vision and dental plans, pet insurance, and other benefits.

The Lehigh Valley is a beautiful area of Pennsylvania, with incredible hiking trails and outdoor activities, a vibrant visual and performing arts community, many festivals to highlight our diverse residents, and excellent restaurants and bars.  The region offers small town, suburban, and urban living, as well as excellent colleges, schools, and quality of life.  We are within 1 hour from the Poconos, 1 hour from Philadelphia, 1.5 hours from NYC, and 2 hours from the beach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Responsible for assuring correct accessioning and numbering of all surgical specimens.

Identifies specimens (and abnormalities) and determines appropriate sectioning technique under the general direction of a pathologist.

Communicates and collaborates with surgical/operating room staff.

Evaluates specimens and dictates gross descriptions according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Performs the technical preparations of intraoperative consultations (frozen sections, touch preps, gross examinations).

Takes photos of all pertinent specimens.

Maintains grossing area including making sure the station is well stocked with appropriate supplies and instruments.

Maintains departmental supplies and equipment. Fills out purchase orders for needed gross room supplies.

Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures.

Complies with all Federal and State Inspection Agency’s protocols.

Consults with pathologists about complex, unusual or difficult specimens.

Must meet pre-determined performance metrics.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

A Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university and successful completion of an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program. Master’s Degree preferred.

Language Ability:

Must be able to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations and demonstrates initiative, strong reasoning ability and good judgment.

Computer Skills:

Ability to use Laboratory Information System and various other software programs

Certificates and Licenses:

Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc). Certifications for Pathology Assistants from the ASCP Board of Registry mandatory.
