CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN-FULL TIME

Job Summary:

The Pharmacy Technician will perform many pharmacy-related and administrative functions under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Responsibilities include: filling patient medications, stocking medication orders, preparing IV medications, maintaining inventory and assisting in billing.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Participate in filling unit dose and floor stock orders. Pre-pack and label medications from bulk to unit dose. Maintain inventory control per policy. Aseptically prepare IV mixtures. Compliant with Joint Commission 797/800 standards for IV Sterile compounding. Complete with a passing grade all department, DOH, and Joint Commission required competencies. Perform top to bottom cleaning twice daily and once a month of all sterile compounding areas in compliance with Joint Commission 797/800 standards for IV sterile compounding.   Deliver controlled substances as assigned. Assist in semi-annual physical inventory. Prepare and label employee prescriptions for inspection by the Pharmacist. Instruct Courier for special delivery needs. Perform courier duties in his or her absence. Assist in monthly nursing unit inspections. Restock ADM cabinets. Complete inspection and cleaning in assigned areas as scheduled. Deliver Medications/IV’s as needed to each unit Perform other errands and duties as assigned. Complete credits and charges from issued medications. Re-stock supplies to the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as needed. Participates in filing documents for retention. Maintain medication rooms on designated nursing units according to standards. Maintain emergency medications (crash carts, tackle boxes and  RSI kits) according to specification Perform medication reconciliation on patients (overnight admissions and potential admissions from the Emergency dept.) Understands the safety risks of medication reconciliations done incorrectly; displaying the importance of the medication reconciliation technician responsibilities Maintain a safe environment for staff and visitors; follow safety policies and procedures. Report matters requiring immediate department manager intervention. Courteously and professionally answers telephone, greets and directs patients, visitors, family members and hospital personnel; notify appropriate personnel of patient requests. Maintain confidentiality in all patient and physician-related information; demonstrates complete discretion when discussing patient information. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities (Unit Specific):

Excellent math skills with ability to perform basic calculations. Knowledge of basic medical terminology, generic and trade names of formulary drugs. Excellent verbal and written communication. Ability to enter data into a computer to maintain records. Ability to cost-effectively manage resources and supplies.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) (PTCE) or NHA (ExCPT) required, must complete all required continuing education credits to renew certificate every 2 years Valid NY State Pharmacy Technician license and registration, must complete all required continuing education credits to renew state registration every 3 years. A minimum of one year of pharmacy technician experience required. Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred.

Working Conditions:

Ability to perform light lifting (up to 15 pounds) using proper body mechanics and repetitious physical activity. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Occasionally requires assembling, using, checking and maintaining equipment. Participates in hospital emergency and disaster drills; knows role in the event of a fire. Actively participates in cross-training, Quality Assessment programs, QAPI, in-service programs, and mandatory classes; completes department specific requirements/competencies. Accepts assignments to other departments as assigned. Occasionally attends meeting and committees as assigned. Handling of Hazardous Pharmaceuticals as needed Complies with DOH requirements for annual health assessments and required immunizations

Pay Range: Certified- $19.57-$21.63/hr

Employee salary is based on commensurate experience and other qualifications.
