UNIT SUMMARY

Six operating rooms.  Equipped to perform everything except open heart and brain surgery.  Monday-Friday operation, 7:00a-5:30p with evenings, weekends and holidays covered by call rotation.  Call consists of five weeknights and (1) 24-hour shift per month, but can include a 2nd, 24-hour shift, depending on the number of weekends in a month. 

GENERAL SUMMARY

Surgical Technologists work under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique to combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Prepares and anticipates instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for usage during the procedure.Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the briefing process.Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriateCleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.Assists other members of the team with cleaning the operating room to facilitate turnovers.Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices ensuring quality patient care.Assists in the development of a proper learning environment in relation to orientation and education of personnel and students.Performs other duties as assigned.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Training:

High school diploma required.Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.Prior training required by a hospital, Surgical Technology, or military program that meets the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform the role.

Work Experience:

Minimum of one-year experience is preferred for all roles

Certification, Licensure, Registration:

Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred.Membership to the AST preferred but not required.Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association required OrBasic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross required

Other Qualifications:

Excellent interpersonal communication skills, organizational skills, and able to adapt to rapidly changing environment.
