Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), one of the top children’s hospitals in the world, and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, an elite research-oriented medical school, seek a Chair of Pediatrics and Pediatrician-in-Chief to play a critical leadership role in this four billion dollar pediatric healthcare enterprise. The Chair leads one of the largest and most complex pediatric departments in the country and plays a critical role in the leadership of CHOP. They are expected to work closely with the administrative leadership of CHOP to maintain and enhance its excellence in clinical care for children, education programs, and scientific research. Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
This is one of the premier leadership opportunities in Pediatrics, and by virtue of the position, the Chair plays a national leadership role in the field. In a changing healthcare environment, the Chair should set an innovative course for the Department, ensuring its financial stability while maintaining its position at the forefront of clinical and research breakthroughs. Foremost, the Chair will need to maintain the exceptional caliber of faculty talent, both at the division chief level as well as throughout the ranks of the Department. They will work with CHOP leadership to increase patient value, striving for continuous improvement in quality of care while also leading efforts to maximize efficiency. The Chair will partner with research leaders to identify new and emerging areas of emphasis and to support promising programs. They will be a staunch advocate for world-class education programs that are rigorous and innovative. The Chair also will play a pivotal role in the development and implementation of a range of new activities and geographic expansion of programs—all to uphold the continued preeminence of the Department and the long-term growth and fiscal vitality of CHOP more generally.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader in academic pediatrics of considerable scientific stature. The Chair should have experience in a comparably large and complex academic medical center in order to quickly grasp the scale of CHOP’s clinical and research programs. They will bring an outstanding track record of success working effectively with institutional leadership to implement ambitious clinical and research agendas. The Chair must be able to establish credibility among faculty at CHOP and across the Perelman School of Medicine. They must also demonstrate a personal style that facilitates communication and collaboration, along with strong negotiation skills.
