Masters OverviewThe Chair of Recreation and Parks for the Village of Garden City, NY, is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and management of the village's recreational activities, parks, and community facilities. This includes staff management and budget oversight, ensuring that all programs and facilities meet the needs of the community, align with public safety standards, and promote a healthy and active lifestyle for residents.
Responsibilities Leadership and Management Provide visionary leadership in the planning and execution of recreational programs and park development projects. Supervise and coordinate the activities of the Recreation and Parks Department staff. Develop and implement policies and procedures that align with the village’s goals and objectives. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to parks and recreation. Further the Village goal of the development and implementation of the department’s recreation and parks master plan. Program Development Oversee the design and implementation of a diverse range of recreational programs for all ages and abilities. Collaborate with community organizations and other stakeholders to enhance program offerings. Monitor trends and best practices in recreational programming to ensure innovative and relevant activities. Oversee the scheduling and usage of recreational facilities and parks. Budget and Financial Management Prepare and administer the annual budget for the Department. Seek and manage alternative funding opportunities, such as grants, sponsorships, partnerships and philanthropic donations. Ensure the efficient utilization of resources and manage department expenditures. Provide regular financial reports and updates to the Village Board. Community Engagement Foster strong relationships with community members, organizations, and stakeholders. Conduct public outreach and gather feedback to assess community needs and preferences. Promote recreational programs and park facilities through various communication channels. Facility Management Oversee the maintenance, operation, and improvement of parks, green spaces, playgrounds, sports fields, pool, and recreational facilities. Coordinate with public works and other departments for facility enhancements and repairs. Develop long-term plans for park and infrastructure improvements. Personnel Management Recruit, train, and evaluate Recreation and Parks Department staff. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment. Ensure staff adherence to policies, procedures, and safety standards. Provide opportunities for professional development and growth.Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Public Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred. Minimum of 5 years’ of progressively responsible management experience, preferably in a large Recreation and Parks department. National Recreation and Park Association’s Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) Certification preferred. Proven track record in program development, budget management, and community engagement. Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to parks and recreation. Skills and Abilities Exceptional leadership and management skills. Strong organizational and planning abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people. Proficiency in budget preparation and financial management. Creative problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
