Responsibilities
Delivers primary spiritual assessment, and care for patients, families and staff as the top priority. Reviews spiritual care screening/triage in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Conducts in-person visits whenever possible and connects virtually when appropriate within the specified chaplain hours. Serves as a liaison to faith, spiritual, and cultural communities on behalf of patient requests. Cares for staff, refers ethical situations, and triages other situations to appropriate staff chaplains/supervisor for consultation and follow-up.
The chaplain provides emotional support, spiritual counsel, and comfort in addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of patients as assigned. This individual provides a spiritual perspective when consulting with Mayo Clinic staff, patients, and families regarding ethical, moral, and personal issues. The chaplain is skilled in crisis and is an active participant in the interdisciplinary patient care team. This individual promotes a healing environment enhancing spiritual and emotional health for both patients and staff. Participates in teamwork with other members of the department, including providing unit and on-call coverage. The chaplain's duties include providing/arranging sacraments/rituals in support of patients, families, and staff as appropriate.
Must be available to work assigned shifts which can include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and possible on-call. Documents patient care encounters and work tasks within the EMR. This individual must demonstrate humility in regards of one’s culture and working knowledge of other cultures. Has awareness and knowledge of principles of human development across the lifespan.
Qualifications
One to two years of experience in a faith community setting or specialized ministry in a healthcare.
Bachelor's degree from a college or university that is accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
One to two years in graduate theological studies accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and/or faith group specific required training. Graduate education equivalency may also be considered. One unit of clinical pastoral education (CPE) required. CPE Unit must be accredited through the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
Familiarity with documentation in the Electronic Health Record. Ecclesiastical/faith community endorsement/documentation from a faith group authority within one year.
Commissioning/licensing or other faith group roster letter/credentials acceptable in lieu of endorsement within one year.
Preferred: Master’s degree in graduate theological studies accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and/or faith group specific required training.
Two or more units of clinical pastoral education accredited through the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
