Job Summary The Charge Nurse manages day-to-day nursing operations at Woods Services for all programs and is skilled in areas of prioritization, communication, timely clinical decision-making, and effective response to crises. Coordinate activities of nursing staff through delegation of tasks, supervision, and maintenance of a safe environment that promotes optimal resident care. Responsibilities: Maintains, reviews, and follows up on Campus Report addressing medical concerns and communicating necessary information to other charge nurses, nursing management, providers, campus administrators, and other parties. Provides supplemental assessment of clients for unit nurses and provides emergency care and first aid when necessary. As liaison, contacts physicians for orders for medical, psychiatric, and dental treatment and emergencies. Will have all information available before contacting the provider(s). Contacts the pharmacy as necessary for medications. Ensures distribution of medications after pharmacy delivery. Ensures notification to families of medical emergencies involving clients including ER visits, suturing, accidents, and hospitalizations. In the event of death, ensures notification of family by physician/hospital. Coordinates transfers of clients to the emergency room for evaluation/hospitalization. Ensures that necessary forms/information accompany clients. Notifies the hospital of the client being sent for evaluation. Assures that the physician has approved the client’s return to Woods, including securing discharge and other records from the hospital. Assists physicians with treatment and evaluation as necessary. Communicates by two-way radio while on duty. Keeps switchboard, Campus Administrator, Nurse Management, and security apprised of medical emergencies/concerns as appropriate. Assists with evacuations and other campus-wide emergencies as necessary. Assists with staffing needs in the absence of Nurse Manager. Will assume responsibility for call-outs. Covers unit nurse assignments as necessary. Refers to on-call Nursing Administrator if problems occur. Serves as on-call Nursing Administrator as scheduled. Posts nursing assignments for their shift the following day. Serves on committees as needed. Provides input into policies and procedures affecting campus–wide nursing concerns. Maintains a minimum of 40 required in-service training. Provides training to other nurses/staff as necessary. Makes rounds at all units to check on clients who need close medical monitoring, including but not limited to follow-up after clinic visits, post-hospital discharges, new admission, etc. Performs all other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Current licensure as RN or LPN in Pennsylvania. Current CPR and AED Current Driver’s License and Smith Driver Training Physical Assessment Skills Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Two years experience in the field of developmental disabilities. Experience in coordinating nursing services. Two years of direct nursing care.
