Summary You will serve as a CHEMIST in the Environmental Division of NAVAL FACILITIES ENG COMMAND HAWAII. Responsibilities You will collect samples of water, soil, sediments, unknown and known hazardous wastes at shore activities and ships throughout Navy Installation on Oahu. You will calibrate, perform and record field analyses such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and residual chlorine. You will perform AHERA/OSHA/EPA asbestos and lead paint sampling for construction projects. You will perform analysis on environmental samples using the appropriate USEPA approved procedures and instrumentation. You will maintain the quality assurance program to verify the validity of test results for accuracy and precision. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-09: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Utilizing knowledge of chemistry theories, concepts, procedures, techniques, methods, and technology applicable to field sampling and laboratory analysis of industrial hazardous wastes and environmental pollutants in water, wastewater, soil, sediments, sludges, oil, solvents, and paint samples; 2) Performing a variety of USEPA approved wet chemistry and instrumental methodologies to produce defensible results and the ability to troubleshoot and correct unforeseen problems; 3) Using analytical instrumentation such as atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectrometer, Pensky-Martins flashpoint apparatus, polarized light microspore, pH and or other ion selective electrode, and UV/Vis spectrometers, etc. to perform the analysis of a variety of matrices; and 4) Determining the specific sampling and/or analytical procedure to satisfy the requirement of any applicable environmental programs. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
