DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Public Works Department is seeking candidates who can perform the following duties:
+ Perform technical chemical analyses following established laboratory procedures and techniques.
+ Conduct chemical, bacteriological, and physical analyses of various materials, including drinking water, raw water, and other samples.
+ Prepare standard solutions and reagents for use in testing.
+ Verify, interpret, and report test results; prepare and distribute required reports.
+ Maintain laboratory inventory; order necessary chemicals, equipment, and supplies to support operations.
+ Implement and adhere to quality assurance procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.
+ Maintain, troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs on laboratory test equipment and instruments.
+ Enter and manage data within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/WORKING CONDITIONS
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
This is a Department of Public Works & Engineering Emergency Management position at the Tier _II__ Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
One year of laboratory work experience is required.
SUBSTITUTION: A Master's or Doctoral degree in Chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited institution may be substituted for the required experience.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
A valid Texas Driver’s License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to candidates with NELAP experience and with outstanding communication skills,
**Preference shall also be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
