Summary This is a public notice flyer to notify interested applicants of anticipated vacancies. Applications will not be accepted through this flyer. Notice of Result letters will not be sent to applicants who respond to this flyer. Responsibilities You will set up and take down, calibrate and maintain equipment for laboratory exercises. You will ensure chemical waste is properly stored and segregated by hazard class according to all relevant safety and regulatory guidelines. You will maintain inventory of all chemicals in all teaching and research laboratories. You will accurately prepare and/or analyze chemical unknowns on which students in laboratories will be graded. You will assist with maintaining and updating Laboratory Operating Procedures (LOP) and train technical staff in basic equipment operation, maintenance, and data interpretation. You will support Quality Assurance programs and advise others on complex procedures and policies. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-09: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-06) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: 1) Planning, coordinating, preparing and maintaining chemicals, solutions and equipment in support of a laboratory (e.g. classroom); 2) Setting up and breaking down chemicals and equipment for experiments, demonstrations or events ; 3) Managing inventory of equipment and supplies to support laboratory experiments and demonstrations; and 4) Testing laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure working condition. GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Utilizing principles and skills needed in calibration and operation of instrumentation such as pH meters, carbon/sulfur determinator, microwave digestion instrumentation, mercury analyzers, optical emission spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, ion chromatographs, rapids flow analyzers, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, etc. in order to employ their use in the analysis of various materials and substances; 2) Evaluating specific instrument uses in the analyses of chemical sample investigations; 3) Providing solutions to assignments frequently requiring complex involved chemistry, interaction and familiarity with other science disciplines such as mathematics, physics, and electronics. 4) Serving as a subject matter expert in designated working areas. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual. Applicants must possess: A bachelor's degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR A combination of education and professional experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows: GS-11: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or A combination of professional experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience. GS-09: Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree or Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or A combination of professional experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Additional Information This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled.
