Join our team! Reuters is seeking an experienced journalist to be our Chief Correspondent for Mexico and Central America, driving coverage of trade and macroeconomics from Latin America’s second largest economy and the United States’ top trading partner.

The successful candidate will build on the bureau’s award-winning coverage at a vital moment as Donald Trump returns to the White House vowing to reshape global trade and the relationship with Mexico. Our Chief Correspondent will deliver deeply reported stories on the biggest economic issues facing Mexico's first female president, including the twists and turns of the relationship with the United States where negotiations on trade are expected to spill over into disputes on migration and counter narcotics. 

The successful candidate will also explore how Trump’s agenda will impact Mexico’s ambition to leverage its proximity to the United States to attract “nearshoring” investment as companies rebase supply chains from Asia, as well as attempts to lure Chinese manufacturers without incurring the wrath of its largest trading partner.   

About the Role  

In this opportunity as a Chief Correspondent, Mexico & Central America, you will:  

Help define and deliver a body of work focusing on turmoil in U.S.-Mexico trade ties and its impact on the economy and businessDevelop key sources to break news on trade, nearshoring, and related issuesServe as deputy in the bureau and run the file when the bureau chief is outMentor colleagues and develop their reporting initiatives into high-impact storiesCollaborate with key U.S. correspondents including those covering the Trump administration in Washington and key affected industries, notably the Detroit automakers

A record of agenda-setting enterprise journalismTalent for working with exclusive sources, documents and dataExperience in trade and macro-economy reporting a plusExamples of effective teamwork in breaking news environmentsExcellent news judgment and outstanding English writing skillsAt least eight years of journalism experienceStrong Spanish
