About the Position:
As the Chief Driver License Examiner, you will have a significant positive impact on highway safety as you lead the 30 certified Driver License Examiners who administer all written and practical driving exams across the state of Maine. In this role, you will set the tone for the most important moment in a driver’s journey - earning the privilege to drive! As the Chief, you will have the opportunity to travel across the state in support of your Examiners, lead working groups to assess and implement new projects, and ensure the examination program remains in compliance with state and federal guidance.
Additionally, frequent travel within the state and occasional out of state travel will be required. A state issued vehicle will be provided.

In this role, you will:
+ Formally lead a world-class Driver License Examination program, to include developing the next generation of Examiner supervisors.
+ Provide candid and professional inputs, feedback and advice to the Division Director on all Division and Bureau matters.
+ As our recognized expert on CDL licensure and standards, represent Maine's equities to federal and industry CDL organizations.
+ Provide guidance to the Division, and when necessary, represent the Division to higher or external authorities, in the absence of the Division Director.
+ Represents the State of Maine to the Test and Evaluation Committee of the American Association on Motor Vehicle Administrators to ensure Maine's compliance with industry standards.
+ Drafts language for consideration by Maine Legislature and facilitates rule making processes on driver license examination issues.
+ Executes professional development programs for the Examiner workforce, including direct involvement in hiring, standardization of training, and annual certification of the workforce to a published international standard.
+ Oversees contract for Maine's digital examination system and contributes to procurement strategies and decisions to sustain that contracted service.
+ Maintains certification and full qualification as a Driver License Examiner, conducting examinations of all types at all locations across the state as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Ability to gain and/or maintain full Examiner qualification status.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage complex programs, with a focus on developing and mentoring staff.
+ Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze regulations and systems, contribute to strategic decision-making, and implement program improvements.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to represent the state in both internal and external forums and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
+ Ability to quickly learn new systems, policies, and regulations, and apply this knowledge in a leadership context while staying current with industry trends.
+ Ability to oversee contracts, manage technical resources, and contribute to the procurement and improvement of digital systems, with a focus on enhancing operational efficiency.
