The Lubrizol Corporation (Lubrizol), headquartered in Wickliffe, OH, is seeking an experienced Environmental Counsel to join its Legal Team.  The Environmental Counsel will lead Lubrizol’s environmental compliance and provide advice regarding environmental, health, safety, quality and product regulations, enforcement, and related litigation matters. This position will be based in Wickliffe, OH, and follow a hybrid working model. Relocation assistance is available. 

 

What You'll Do: 

Provide legal support for Lubrizol’s environmental operations, including counseling on all aspects of air, waste, land, water, transportation and security matters related to regulatory compliance, investigations and enforcement issues. Lead legal support for the enterprise-wide environmental issues including dealings with third parties, related to federal, state, or local environmental or other agencies or representatives, and their international equivalents. Negotiate agreements related to environmental operations, including permits, consent decrees, settlements and similar agreements. Provide legal support for Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality, and product regulations, and conduct due diligence in mergers and acquisitions transactions. Counsel Lubrizol’s remediation site portfolio, including reviewing consultant reports, assisting in assessing financial assurance requirements, and counseling on site priorities. Coordinate with and oversee outside counsel to ensure proper handling of environmental matters. Participate in specific trade organization committees to advise on policy, rulemaking activities and proposed regulations. Stay current on emerging trends in environmental law through continuing legal education, industry publications, and participation in professional conferences and associations.

 

Skills That Make A Difference

Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school. Minimum of 8 years of experience in the practice of environmental law in an environmental regulatory agency, law firm or international corporate law department. Experience analyzing environmental regulatory requirements and developing compliance programs. Preferable experience in product regulatory matters, such as TSCA, REACH, and similar programs. Member in good standing with a US state bar; if bar is other than Ohio, ability to obtain registered corporate counsel status. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team providing timely, clear and implementable legal advice to accomplish the business objectives. Capability to anticipate, define and mitigate environmental risks. Preferable experience conducting M&A due diligence on environmental matters. Ability to independently organize, prioritize, and manage a high volume of projects. Solid work ethic, commitment to job completion and personal integrity. Approximately 20 % travel.
