Chief Financial Officer
Location: San Marcos Department: Administration Primary Supervisor: CEO Position Type: Full-Time, Salary, Exempt Schedule: Monday-Friday Casa de Amparo is seeking a dynamic and experienced nonprofit financial leader to serve as our Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This is a unique opportunity for a strategic and mission-driven professional to drive financial excellence in a growing social services agency dedicated to supporting youth affected by abuse and neglect. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CFO will provide strategic financial leadership to ensure the organization’s fiscal health and alignment with its mission. Working closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and department heads, the CFO will develop and implement financial strategies to support operational excellence and growth. Key responsibilities include overseeing financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting, ensuring compliance with nonprofit regulations and GAAP. The CFO will manage cash flow, monitor revenue and expenses, and develop the annual budget to align resources with strategic priorities. The role also involves managing grants, risk, insurance, investment strategies, and diversifying funding sources. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader who will lead and mentor the accounting team, foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, and strengthen productive relationships with donors, funders, financial consultants and banking institutions. The role includes providing strategic financial insights to support decision-making at the executive and board levels. Key Responsibilities: Financial Strategy & Planning + Develop and implement financial strategies that support organizational growth and sustainability. + Lead financial forecasting, ensuring resources align with short- and long-term objectives. + Provide financial insights and recommendations to the CEO, Board, and leadership team to guide decision-making. Accounting, Reporting & Compliance + Oversee financial reporting, including timely preparation of all financial statements. + Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP), tax filings (990), audits, and grant financial requirements. + Serve as the primary liaison for audits, maintaining strong internal controls and regulatory compliance. Budgeting & Financial Management + Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads to ensure accurate financial projections. + Manage cash flow, liquidity, and financial reserves to ensure fiscal sustainability. + Oversee grant management, ensuring financial reporting, fund allocation, and compliance with donor restrictions. Operations, Risk Management & Legal Oversight + Establish and enforce internal financial controls, policies, and risk management strategies. + Oversee financial operations, including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and expense management. + Provide strategic oversight of the organization’s insurance and ensure appropriate risk management strategies are in place to protect organizational assets. + Oversee legal compliance, contracts, and regulatory requirements in collaboration with legal counsel. Board & Stakeholder Engagement + Present financial reports and key insights to the Board of Directors and Operations Committee. + Collaborate with Development and program teams to align financial planning with fundraising and programmatic goals. + Foster productive relationships with donors, funders, and financial institutions. Qualifications & Competencies + Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred. + Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible financial management experience, with at least 5 years in nonprofit financial leadership. + Expertise in nonprofit financial planning, analysis, statement preparation, and grant management. + Strong knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations for nonprofits, and cost allocation methodologies. + Advanced proficiency in financial software, including QuickBooks Online (QBO), HRIS platforms (Paycom), and Microsoft Suite. + Proven ability to synthesize complex financial data, develop innovative solutions, and provide strategic financial insights. + Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including executive-level presentations. + Ability to meet all pre-employment screening requirements, including health exams, TB tests, and clearances required by Community Care Licensing (CCL).
