Summary About the Position: Serves as Chief Mate on a self-propelled, sea-goings diesel powered, Class I, hopper dredge and directing dredging operations. Responsibilities Directing dredging operations. Instructs and directs quartermaster in steering vessel. Keeps log of movement of vessel and during watch and records data. Operation, maintenance, and safety of the dredge. Supervises and directs the repairs and performance of general maintenance work by the deck department. Care of deck and superstructure. Handling of hawsers and mooring lines. Supervisory tasks such as informally recommending promotions, reassignments, performance ratings and awards, disciplinary actions, step increases. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Chief Mate Hopper Dredge without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks of a Chief Mate Hopper Dredge. I am skilled at directing subordinates on a marine vessel engaged in dredging operations; directing quartermaster in steering vessel; supervising and directing repairs and general maintenance of the dredge. I am considered an expert with no supervision needed to carry out the responsibilities of the position. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability to perform Motor Vehicle Operator duties w/o more than normal supervision Dredging Operation and Equipment Maintenance Vessel Operations Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) WORKING CONDITIONS: Spends a large portion of time in the pilot house, on deck, or outside in all kinds of weather, being exposed to the elements and subject to the possibility of slipping on wet decks. Danger of drowning is present in case of accident. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Light to moderate physical effort is required for continuous standing, operating of various controls while on watch, etc. Qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Education Additional Information You MUST UPLOAD your USCG Credentials, or you may be rated ineligible. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
