POSITION PURPOSE

The CNO will have oversight of Des Moines, MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and MercyOne West Des Moines Medical Center. This position provides clinical and administrative leadership and direction to patient care areas, facilitates development, implementation, delivery and evaluation of patient care services through collaboration with clinical/medical staff directors and other leadership. Assures achievement of goals and adherence to policy and standards set forth by state, federal and hospital regulatory agencies. Accountable to establish operational mechanisms and nurse management structure to facilitate quality patient care.  Creates an environment of innovation and creativity through transformational leadership.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Articulates the total patient care program including departmental scope, philosophy, standards, goals, and objectives of patient services.

Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates patient care activities within the nursing team to ensure improved clinical outcomes and compliance with accreditation and regulatory agency standards.

In cooperation with teams, develops patient care programs, policies, standards, and procedures that describe how clinical care needs of individuals and patient populations are assessed, evaluated, and met. Collaborates closely with the other management staff in order to improve the continuity of care.

Develops operating and capital expenditure budgets for review and approval. Ensures that appropriate adjustments of expenses are made corresponding to changes in volume and acuity.

Implements ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of care delivered to patients. Champions process improvement teams to improve care processes and customer service within the patient care teams.

Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to promote the recruitment, selection, retention, development, continuing education and advancement goals of directors, unit coordinators, clinical staff and patient care providers.

Studies trends and developments in nursing practice and integrates new techniques for patient care delivery. Maintains knowledge of professional literature in clinical nursing, leadership, disease states, and human behavior, and models continuous teaching/learning.

Ensures the availability of qualified and competent personnel to provide continuous and timely services required by patients. Selects, develops, and establishes performance expectations; coaches, evaluates, and when necessary, disciplines or recommends the appropriate disciplinary action according to human resource policy.

Interacts with peers, medical staff, senior administration, various MercyOne Trinity Health committees, external professional, and governmental agencies in addressing the development, implementation, and evaluation of systems, programs, services, policies, and procedures that affect the organization and its ability to deliver quality patient care services.

Participates in local, state, and national professional and related organizations.

Guides personnel to use available resources and opportunities to teach patients, families, and employees.

Represents nursing at medical staff meetings and on other hospital-wide committees.

Represents Health Ministry and MercyOne on regional or network boards as delegated.

Works independently and makes decisions for which there may be little precedent.

Supports and abides by departmental and safety policies and procedures.

Performs other responsibilities as requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Registered Nursing license in Iowa. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree with appropriate master’s degree in Nursing, Business or Health Administration. Doctoral education preferred.

Minimum of five (5) years executive/director level leadership experience in patient care in an acute care setting

Advanced knowledge of professional nursing practice in an executive or specialty practice area as evidenced through certification (e.g. CENP, NEA-BC, FACHE, etc.).  Certification required within 18 months of hire. 

Member of a professional nursing organization

A thorough understanding of the Electronic Medical Record, concepts of clinical informatics, and other advanced health care technologies

A thorough understanding of the health care environment and all applicable laws and regulations

In depth knowledge of system thinking, change leadership, shared governance, matrix reporting, continuous improvement, process excellence, and financial and productivity management

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with all members of the administrative and health care team

The ability to synthesize and interpret large amounts of clinical, quality, and financial data

Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills

Demonstrated ability to model the use of evidence-based leadership/practice, and project management skills.

Displays excellent interpersonal and communication skills to provide advice, counsel and leadership to staff, physicians, patients and the community

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Leadership and management skills necessary to foster the growth and development of direct reports, motivate individuals and teams, and resolve problems in a diplomatic professional manner.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to provide advice, counsel and leadership to staff, physicians, patients and the community.  These skills must also be used to effectively develop and foster collaborative working relationships with all levels of staff/management/leadership, influence results and gamer support.

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills necessary to conceptualize ideas in an unstructured, fast paced, dynamic and multifunctional environment requiring creativity, innovation, foresight and mature judgment

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to balance, manage and adapt to frequently changing work priorities, and be able to prioritize and balance the requirements of working with the Health Ministries.

Must be able to travel to the various MercyOne Trinity Health sites as applicable.
