The Chief Operator is responsible for the supervision and operation of rail test vehicles by company and industry standards. Chief Operators will be evaluated based on performance metrics used by their field supervision as well as by the customer. The responsibility of the Nordco Rail Flaw detection team is to understand the expectations of the customer and work to meet or exceed expectations.What do we want to know about you? Minimum high school diploma or GED. Bachelor's degree in a technical-related discipline preferred. Mechanical technical training a plus. Level I and II Ultrasonic Testing certifications a strong plus.Completed the required number of hours as a trainee as outlined by the FRA.Valid Driver’s license.Qualified in all safe operating practices as required by the company, railroad and other involved Agencies.Graduated from an approved course in the basics of ultrasonic technology; (UT Level 1 and UT Level 2) preferred.Must be a team player and willing to do whatever it takes to make the customer happy in a safe and ethical manner.Extensive travel for long periods within Canada.What will your typical day look like? Remain well versed in and practice all railroad and highway safety and operating procedures.Perform a high-quality Ultrasonic Test (UT) and maintain the skill, methods, and practices needed.Supervise all crew members and ensure a high level of professionalism.Maintain positive and constructive relations with the customer representatives in the field; must conduct themselves in a customer friendly manner.Adhere to and execute instructions found in reference manuals as well as customer playbook.Ensure the proper maintenance and calibration of equipment.Partners with Assistant Operator to maintain 5S.Produce all necessary paperwork including but not limited to, daily reports, maintenance reports, trip reports, etc.Overall responsibility for the truck and all of its components.Maintains a DOT logbook and timesheets.Supervise the training of new employees under guidance of Training and Development Manager.Report daily expenses and parts usage accurately.What about the physical demands of the job?While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to dust, oil, grease, fumes or airborne particles. Although work is primarily done inside a testing vehicle the employee might frequently be required to be outside in any weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, climb, walk unassisted, sit and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. This position will require extensive travel away from throughout Canada.You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
