**GENERAL SUMMARY** **:**
The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) provides senior leadership and direction to the AdventHealth Research Enterprise. The CSO works with senior corporate leadership to develop the vision and strategic agenda for research to be performed at AdventHealth and ensures that the AdventHealth research vision is achieved.
The CSO leads the research executive team, manages academic, basic, translational, and industry research relationships, works with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to imbed research in clinical settings as well as graduate medical education programs, and develops a research model that fosters the strategic growth of research across the organization.
The CSO will also support research into the application of and effectiveness of whole person care.
**PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:**

**Scope of Responsibility** :
The CSO will work with appropriate Hospital and AdventHealth Clinical leadership to develop a multidisciplinary research strategy for the AdventHealth Research Institute (AHRI); including the development of program metrics to regularly track and report on same and to establish mutually agreed upon and measurable goals for the AHRI that will incorporate the following program goals:
· Provide Research Oversight and Direction to the AHRI - the overarching goal is to establish at AH a new vision for research at AH that encompasses the Vision 2030 and the results of the long-range planning process.
· Under the umbrella of the AHRI, the CSO will provide oversight to research activities across the enterprise of AH and engage with Facility, Regional and Division leaders to ensure compliance with relevant statutes and AH policy and procedure.
· Chair the AdventHealth Research Council.
· Lead the development and management of research policy and procedure for AH Corporate.
· Coordinate research across all divisions.
· Set strategy and direction for AH research and research operations: Identifies research themes that will be prioritized and supported [top down], provides infrastructure and reinforces discipline around investigator-initiated and sponsored research [bottom-up]
· Use the research agenda to initiate, stimulate, and advance clinical and market facing strategies.
· Maximize the impact of AH research (ROI): Focus energy and resources in areas that will produce high impact results
· Improve and expand research resources: Achieve increased efficiency and catalyze externally funded research
· Aim to bring research and service lines together: Drive knowledge and processes that improve health, reduces cost and/ or improves the patient experience
· Lead research related Philanthropic efforts
· Mentor AH Institutes and other research departments on research strategy, faculty recruiting, and research grants increasing success of the individual Institute in research endeavors
· Strengthen research integrity and compliance: Enables confidence in our consumers, partners and funding agencies and protects the company
· Support GME research and physician/scientist training: Grow the next generation of clinical researchers
· Advise AH on scientific matters: Serve as a resource to integrate and disseminate research findings across the system
· Office of Scientific Review: Assist in the evaluation of new science and technologies
· Actively work with AH campuses, service lines, and Institutes to recruit physician scientists to the AH research enterprise
· Government relations and legislative affairs-Shared with VP of Research: Identify key areas for the research portion of the legislative agenda
· External Academic Relations: Manage relationships with Florida based and other academic institutions to facilitate research cooperation, mutually beneficial resource sharing, joint research grant funding and the appropriate legal and process structure.
· Enhance the AH brand through public relations, annual research reports, marketing and public appearances,
· Grow the academic and research environment at AH: Develop research training and mentoring programs
· Maintain an active independent research program
· Maintain scientific credibility and CSO awareness of operational challenges

· Research Compliance: Research Compliance Officer reports directly to the CSO
· Research Business Development: Work with campus leaders, CSO, institute directors, researchers and physicians to secure business development funding and support
· Serve as Institutional Official for IRB and IACUC
· Advances the research capabilities of ADU and facilitates ADU student’s access to AHRI for research experiences
**KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED** **:**
· Ability to lead the development of diverse teams in both research administrative/operations and company environments
· Strategic planning, budget and pro forma development
· Development of metrics and performance against metrics
· Collaborative leader that seeks group opinions in decision making
Qualifications
**EDUCATION REQUIRED:**
· M.D. and/or Ph.D. and/or M.D./Ph.D. from an accredited institution
· Post-graduate training in a medical specialty

**EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:**
· Well documented clinical-translational research experience in an academic environment
· Experience in building industry partnerships and relationships.
· At least 15 years’ experience in a clinical research or clinical-translational research environment
· Proven history of sustained research funding including NIH, industry and foundation support
· Senior level experience in research administration, finance, and clinical operations management
· Demonstrated successful experience in academic administration and ability to build strong internal and external relationships.
· Knowledge of federal research regulations including but not limited to IRB, FDA, etc. including quality management systems and audit activities
· Experience in setting vision and strategic direction for the identification, development, and growth of private and public sources of research funding in translational and clinical research
· Proven ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and internal/external constituencies at all levels in a complex and diverse environment.
· Exceptional, written, oral and interpersonal communication skills

**LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:**
· Current, unrestricted State of Florida license as a medical doctor; or
· Unrestricted State of Florida license as a medical doctor within one year of hire date; or
· If Ph.D., successful acquisition of doctorate degree from a nationally recognized university

· Board certification in their defined field of expertise
