Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for an exceptional, highly motivated, and experienced civil litigator to serve as Chief State Trial Counsel.

Primary Duties: The Chief State Trial Counsel will create and lead a new Office of the State Trial Counsel, which represents the Attorney General’s commitment to the highest quality of civil trial advocacy throughout the Attorney General’s Office. This new Office will serve Assistant Attorneys General within the Office’s civil enforcement and litigation bureaus (including its Public Protection Advocacy, Health Care Fair Competition, Energy Environment, and Government Bureaus) as a central resource for trial strategy, case development, and trial preparation and presentation. The Office of the State Trial Counsel will support Assistant Attorneys General in specific litigation matters and will lead or otherwise work directly on select complex litigation matters, as needed. The successful candidate will create and run an officewide hub for civil trial advocacy training and skills development for the Office.

Position Type: Full-Time/Exempt. Our current hybrid model includes some remote workdays for most positions.

Salary: $165,395

Position Requirements: A minimum of 10 years of relevant complex civil litigation and trial experience (which may include judicial clerkships) and Massachusetts bar membership are required. Significant trial advocacy experience, outstanding oral and written communication skills, thorough knowledge of state and federal civil procedure, and a strong ability to work with a deadline is essential. Because the candidate will be responsible for developing a new office within the AGO, they must have experience setting organizational goals, engaging in strategic planning, and implementing effective systems. The candidate must also have a demonstrated ability to mentor and lead junior attorneys, and working effectively in teams is essential. A familiarity with Massachusetts Superior Court practice, particularly the Business Litigation Session, is desirable.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve, and an interest in supporting a respectful, diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
